Volunteer Supervisor/Research Assistant

The Elephant Orphanage Project (EOP) was established in Southern Kafue National Park (KNP) in 2007, with the mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release orphaned elephants back into the wild. Itis part of a conservation initiative developed and operated by Game Rangers International (GRI), a Zambian NGO. GRIcurrently supports 21elephants across the Lilayi Elephant Nursery and the Kafue Release Facility aged between 1and14years old.
GRIis currently looking for an energetic and motivated individual with a background and interest in wildlife conservation / research whocould provide onsite supervision for the Behavioural Observations Study at the Elephant Nursery withthe associated short-term volunteers conducting this research. In addition,the role is also to support the Nursery Manager with the day-to-day operations of the Lilayi Elephant Nursery. The VS/RAwill report to the Senior Research Assistantfor all behaviour research and directly support the Nursery Manager with all operations, elephant activities and administration within the Lilayi Elephant Nursery domain. Work at the Nursery will be more focused on the ‘Rescue’ and primary ‘Rehabilitation’ element of the EOP, with the VS/RAbeing based at and living on-site at the Lilayi Elephant Nursery (LEN). .

Main Roles & Responsibilities:
1.Management of Behavioural Observation Study (BOS) with short term volunteer and keeper support–conducting data collection, spot checking others and decoding data
2.Assist with production of research proposals and future studies i.e. biodiversity surveys
3.Support with data handling and presenting data for reports and displays
4.Assist with full-time supervision andsupport for short-termvolunteers
5.Supervise volunteers to support with conservation education (with the Conservation Education Ranger)
6.Liaise with the Community Outreach Manager to organise volunteer support with Women’sGroups and capacitybuilding.
7.Assist with visitor management: informative talks for large audience and private behind the scenestours
8.Support withcamp management, activities and administration as required
9.Photograph management, social media updates and promotions
