THE BEST GIS/RS SPECIALIST JOB IN CONSERVATION
BCP’s mission is making conservation of wildlife habitat valuable to people.
BCP is a leading African forest carbon company. We are working with community and Government partners to help conserve approximately 1 million hectares of globally significant wildlife habitats, and to benefit 80,000 people. BCP is recruiting for a Carbon Specialist to assist BCP in a new phase of REDD+project design and development, and monitoring of social and biodiversity impacts.
The primary responsibilities of the Specialist are to work in the Technology team to achieve VCS and CCB verifications, conduct pre-viability studies, conduct impact monitoring, advanced GIS/RS analysis, data management and IT, and to keep BCP at the forefront of REDD+ methodological developments. The position requires advanced remote sensing and GIS skills, as well as skills in data management, advanced spreadsheet skills, excellent English writing skills, as well as a willingness to live in Zambia.
Management skills are a must, but experience with REDD+ is preferred, though not a requirement. The position will require some travel to rural areas, mainly in Africa. The candidate is expected to be a solid team builder, with great communication skills and a keen desire to build capacity in monitoring, forest carbon science and GIS/RS
in Zambia and the SADC region. Community forestry, and living in a developing country will give the applicant an advantage.
This is an opportunity for a Remote Sensing/GIS Expert looking to further develop his/her technically specific career in an international active company.
The position will be based in Lusaka, Zambia. .

PRINCIPAL DUTIES
• VCS and CCB verifications, including PD writing. Flawless English writing technical skills needed.
• RS/GIS: Image interpretation and classification, data management and database development.
• Carbon: CDM parameterization, produce carbon stock estimates from biomass and soil plot measurements.
• Manage dispersed forest and conservation monitoring teams.
• Train colleagues in carbon standards and ensure project design and implementation follows standards and laws.
• Conduct pre-viability analyses of potential new REDD+ project areas.
• Large-scale mapping (ideally with tools like Earth Engine or Sepal),
• GIS database management,
• Geospatial modeling,
• Forest biomass assessment,
• Design, implement and oversee digital biodiversity monitoring systems.
PROBLEM SOLVERS WANTED.
• Master’s Degree minimum requirement in field such as geology, geographic information science, ecology, forestry or similar, preferably with a focus on remote sensing and one of the following disciplines: tropical forestry, land use.

Work Experience:
• Minimum two years work experience in remote sensing, GIS, or REDD+ MRV
• related field.
• Advanced knowledge of remote sensing and the thematic analysis of satellite data
• Advanced practical experience in remote sensing/GIS, EO data processing / tropical forest / landuse/land cover classification
• Ability to work in an independent and responsible way
• Desirable knowledge: REDD+ MRV, Programming experience and skills, especially in JavaScript, Python and/or R and Knowledge of geodatabases (e.g. PostGIS) and SQL queries
• Excellent command of English
• Demonstrated report writing experience and skills
• Computer skills: Use of FOSS remote sensing and GIS software, such as Java Script for Google Earth Engine, R, Gdal, QGIS, GRASS, data collection tools such as Open Data Kit and CyberTracker, and GPS applications such as BackCountry Navigator.
• Knowledge of GHG mitigation Standards preferred: VCS REDD+ methodologies, the VCS standards and guidelines in general as well as other applicable UNFCCC guidelines such as the IPCC guidelines as well as relevant components of the CCB Standard.
• Project Management, people management and leadership skills.
