Job Description
Climate change poses one of the greatest threats to health in the 21st century, with disproportionate impact on low-and-middle income countries including Zambia. Climate change disruptions have been shown to increase gender-based vulnerabilities and deleteriously impact sexual and reproductive health in some low-and-middle income country contexts, but research in the Zambian context is limited. The Population, Environment, and Climate Change began as an intra-Council initiative in 2018 to generate rigorous research the intersection of climate change, gender, and reproductive health. This qualitative assessment will explore the impact of severe and prolonged droughts on sexual and reproductive health in high-hit Western and Southern Provinces.
Population Council will collect data from Mongu and Senanga in Western Province and Mazabuka and Kalomo districts in Southern province from communities that have experienced severe and prolonged drought in. Focus groups will be conducted with men and women most affected on how drought has affected their lives and how this impact affects sexual and reproductive health in the community. In-depth interviews with local health workers and key informant interviews with local leaders and stakeholders will also be conducted to gather other perspectives on the links between severe and prolonged drought and the community’s well-being.
The Population Council is hiring male and female research assistants for the PERCC project. The position is a temporal assignment for a period of 60 days. The research assistant will be assigned to conduct focus group discussions and in-depth interviews with study participants. The research assistants will also be required to ensure they obtain informed consent for all participants before interviewing them. .

Major Responsibilities
• Conduct focus group discussions and key informant interviews with participants in local language (English, Lozi, Tonga or Nyanja)
• Administer informed consent to all participants and store all consent forms securely
• Proven experience and ability in conducting qualitative interviews in Lozi, Tonga and Nyanja a must
• Must have experience in transcribing from local language (Lozi, Tonga or Nyanja) into English
• Able to use audio recorders
• Ensure privacy and confidentiality of study participants
• Ensure accurate and full completion of all forms and report any issues to the field coordinator
• Participate in regular meetings with the field coordinator
• Maintain study equipment and materials
Place of Performance
This position involves extensive travel in the selected schools and will be based in Mazabuka, Kalomo, Mongu and Senanga .
