GUEST REVIEW
Fabulous Flatdogs- a gateway to the wondrous Luangwa
We came back to Flatdogs after 10 years and spent 2 wonderful nights there. It was and is one of our favourite places to visit and we had an amazing experience. We stayed in chalet 2b which was huge with its own kitchenette although we didn’t use it as there is an all day restaurant available with a long menu list and daily specials all freshly made, beautifully presented and delicious. The pool area is lovely with views over the river. Jess, Ade & Harold were fantastic hosts as were all the staff who were excellent and it felt like home away from home. Our guide was Yotam and he was brilliant as we saw lions, leopards, hippos, giraffes, zebras, elephants, buffaloes and wild dogs amongst others as well as a lion eating a kill and the interaction between him and the lionesses, being stuck in an elephant traffic jam, and watching hyenas firstly steal a leopards kill and secondly eat a buffalo that was stuck in the mud. The Luangwa is a stunning place to visit.

Harold also kindly took us the Project Luangwa sponsored school (Flatdogs is a donor) and it was heartwarming to meet the boys that we sponsor and the coordinator Mable and to hear the effort and the drive behind the project to provide sustainability to the area. Flatdogs was a wonderful trip and we hope we can fulfil our vow to be back every year!

YOUR SOUTH LUANGWA SAFARI
Flatdogs is the closest camp to the Mfuwe main gate of South Luangwa National Park. All our South Luangwa safari activities are led by a fully-qualified guide, and include morning drives, night drives, and walking safaris.

The professionalism and skills of our guides are what get you to the best sightings with the fewest number of humans around. We normally limit numbers to six guests per vehicle and our guides use their guiding skills, not their radios, to find the game. You might sit listening to the sounds of the bush, alone in the wilderness, when the guide hears an alarm call. What better way to find a leopard?

The South Luangwa is one of the few parks in Africa to allow night drives, and the guides’ knowledge of animal behaviour really pays off after dark. Knowing where predators might hunt, which other predators might be around to take advantage, and how to ensure we don’t interfere with the normal behaviour of these animals is crucial to your enjoyment.

Walking and Driving Safaris
For most of the year, depending on the weather, we are able to offer walking safaris. These are a fascinating, more detailed view of the park ecology and of the wildlife. It is also a chance to dive more deeply into dung, or ultimately, to track game on foot either using spoor or with a little help from birds and animals who 'alarm' in the presence of predators. Walks last three to four hours and are commonly taken in the morning when it’s cooler. We also offer a drive/walk combination of a two-hour walk with a two-hour drive.

Our morning drives leave camp at 06h00 and last for at least four hours. Night drives depart at 16h00 and return at around 20h10 when the national park is closed to all vehicles. We use a fully-equipped 4x4 Toyota Land Cruiser with radio so they are in contact with Flatdogs in case of emergency. Private self-drive vehicles may enter the park from 06h00 to 18h00 daily.

WHY SOUTH LUANGWA?
The Luangwa Valley is home to an astonishing diversity of life, including around 100 species of mammals, more than 400 bird species and over 2000 types of plants! Added to this, there’s an amazing density of game, particularly along the riverine strip and our guests often comment that ‘there’s something around every corner!’

There are several “big 5” destinations in Africa. But few of them can offer the true wilderness feel, professional guiding and diverse habitats that the South Luangwa National Park offers. The home of walking safaris and night drives, to allow visitors to experience game sightings in completely different ways to many other safari destinations

AFRICA'S BEST KEPT SECRET
Although not a “big 5” destination due to the sad demise of the rhino in the 1980’s, the Luangwa combines fantastic wildlife with extremely high-quality guiding, Luangwa often comes out near the top of the list of Africa’s most sought after parks. Yet, as a relatively unknown safari destination, you are not sharing it with thousands of others!

South Luangwa has many herbivores, three of which stand out as being endemic to the area. Thornicroft’s giraffe has different markings to the giraffes in the rest of southern Africa. Those that are familiar with the others will see the difference and immediately see why our giraffes are often described as the most beautiful!

Elephant and buffalo are numerous with both having the freedom to wander throughout the GMAs (Game Management Areas aka conservation areas) surrounding the park, and the park itself. With no fences allowed in the GMAs the camp is regularly visited by these large herbivores. Antelope, especially impala, bushbuck and puku, arealso present in large numbers, thus providing plenty of on the hoof take away for the predators of the valley!

The main predators in the Luangwa Valley are lion, leopard, spotted hyena and wild dog. Lion, hyaena and leopard are commonly seen with wild dog numbers on the increase, and although traditionally they used to only be seen in the rainy season, we are now seeing wild dog more regularly and in larger numbers throughout the year.

The South Luangwa is renowned as being the place to see leopard. Leopard hunt nocturnally, and South Luangwa is one of Africa’s few national parks to allow spotlit night drives. Through the continued insistence on ethical and respectful guiding policy, leopards here in the Luangwa have become used to vehicles and are now considerate enough to continue hunting and feeding in their presence, leading to the outstanding sightings we are lucky to enjoy here.

The bird-life in the South Luangwa National Park is also exceptional, especially during the rainy summer months (December to March), however there are beautiful and interesting birds to be seen and enjoyed all through the year, and learning about them is often an unexpected pleasure on a guided safari. Here are some of the more fetching species we commonly see!
