About HOT
Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT) is a US-based NGO and global community of thousands of volunteers working together to use maps and open data for humanitarian response and the Sustainable Development Goals. As the world’s preeminent participatory mapping NGO, HOT has fostered a global mapping community composed of more than 280,000 people with ground operations in eight countries. When major disaster strikes anywhere in the world, HOT rallies this global network to create the maps and data that enable responders to reach those in need.
HOT works closely with humanitarian and development partners including the Red Cross, Médecins Sans Frontières, World Bank, and UN OCHA, among others. In 2020, HOT was awarded funding from The Audacious Project. Over the next five years, this funding will enable HOT to scale up its support to local mapping communities with the aim of mapping an area home to one billion people, adding places at high risk of natural disaster or experiencing poverty.
About the Role
The Associate Project Manager will support on an upcoming project in Zambia. The project aims to provide support to the local and national government in Zambia in understanding public access to government services, particularly in rural areas. This project will use an open and collaborative approach to geospatial data collection, ensuring the participation of local governments, community-based organizations and community stakeholders.
Serving as the local representative of HOT on the project, reporting to HOT’s Project Manager – Zambia, you will have wide and varied responsibilities. These range from assisting in the set up of HOT’s presence in project locations to project planning, day-to-day management of all activities in-country, building and maintaining relationships with government agencies, NGOs, and donors, staff supervision, and oversight of administrative, operational, and security procedures in the project locations. .
Responsibilities
As part of her/his duties, the Contractor is expected to fulfill the following list of responsibilities:
• Serve as one of HOT’s representatives in Zambia.
• Supported by the Project Manager, execute the Scope of Work as laid out in the terms of reference for the project.
• Organize, provide and facilitate trainings and workshops to project stakeholders.
• Oversee and participate in the remote and field mapping operations in multiple provinces of Zambia.
• Assist in management and recruitment of local staff
• Oversee project finances, HR, and logistics with support from the Project Manager and HOT Global staff.
• Assist in setting up the mapping process, including data review and providing a motivating and rewarding mapping experience for participants and stakeholders.
• Participate in communications (such as blog posts and social media) on project progress and impact.
• Write documentation and reporting as requested and necessary.
• Assist the Project Manager in other tasks contributing to a successful completion of the project.
• Actively promote the open data and OpenStreetMap community in Zambia, organizing events, mapathons, supporting students and universities in setting up YouthMappers clubs, and supporting a community of practice.

Qualifications & Experience
Required
• Based within the region, able to travel and authorized to work in Zambia
• At least 1 year of professional experience
• Demonstrable and successful experience in a supervisory role within a field team
• Appreciable skills and experience in OpenStreetMap (OSM) and associated OSM tools and GIS
• Proven track record of organizing and implementing mapping training and other activities such as mapathon, setting up a Youth Mappers chapter, hosting HOT mapping campaigns, etc.
• Ability and desire to work collaboratively and ensure successful project implementation
• Ability to solve practical problems and react quickly and calmly to changing or emergency circumstances
• Able to read, write, understand and speak (professional) English.
• A good sense of humor and willingness to learn
• Driven, self-motivated and strives for continuous improvement
• Familiarity with the local OpenStreetMap Community
• Comfortable working in a fully or partially remote work environment, as well as in field conditions.
Desirable
• University degree in geography, GIS, Disaster Risk Management, urban planning or equivalent experience; or demonstrated equivalent humanitarian related experience. • Experience working on a HOT field project
• Experience working with/in humanitarian or development agencies/NGOs
• Good understanding of field team management policies
• Significant prior experience of leading OpenStreetMap (OSM) community, passionate and motivated about open source and open data
• Passionate about humanitarian and development work demonstrated through prior professional experiences
