Background information

The Forum for African Women Educationalists (FAWE) is a pan-African non-governmental organization founded in 1992 by five women ministers of education to promote girls‘ and women's education in sub-Saharan Africa- in line with Education for All- by making sure girls and women have access to schools and are able to complete their studies and fulfil their dreams. With headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya, FAWE has a network of 34 National Chapters in 33 countries.

Established in 1997, FAWE Rwanda Chapter aims to build a world in which gender disparities in education are eliminated and all Rwandese girls access education, perform well and complete their studies. It promotes gender equity and equality in education in Rwanda by fostering positive policies, practices and attitudes towards girls‘ education. This is done through increasing access and retention as well as improve the quality of education for all girls within the school system and for women in universities.

FAWE Rwanda interventions have mainly focused on changing the prevailing attitudes and mindsets regarding girls‘ education to ensure gender equity and equality in education especially with regards to increasing girls‘ access to basic education. Specific interventions spanned from influencing education policies and laws to ensure they are gender sensitive,teachers training in gender responsive pedagogy in schools, empowering girls through TUSEME clubs where they are also taught life skills and through various advocacy and awareness-raising activities at the national and community levels. In partnership with funding partners (USG, MasterCard Foundation, Winrock/REACH, UNHCR, Beautiful World Canada and many individual sponsors) FAWE Rwanda supported to date more than 20,000 girls and boys achieve basic education i.e. primary and secondary education by providing tuition and non-tuition financial assistance to smart girls from disadvantaged households.

FAWE Rwanda is seeking to recruit an experienced Career Guidance and Counselling Officer who has integrity and is results-oriented. This position is open to Rwandan Nationals only.

The role

Reporting to the Programme coordinator, the Career Guidance and Counselling Officer will be responsible for coordinating career guidance and counselling for Scholars, building the capacity of teacher mentors, Tuseme Club patrons, and Alumni mentors, and overall reporting for the project.

Responsibility

Specifically, the Career Guidance and Counselling Officer will:

  • Lead a team of Alumni mentors who will assist teacher mentors in offering career guidance and counselling services to Scholars
  • Coordinate the development of materials and training of teacher mentors, Tuseme Club patrons and FAWE Alumni mentors
  • Offer information on high school course offerings, career options, the type of academic and occupational training needed to succeed in the workplace, and postsecondary opportunities that are associated with their field of interest.
  • Provide teachers, administrators, and parents with infom'|ation to use to support students’ career exploration and postsecondary educational opportunities.
  • Advise students and parents on high school programs and academic curriculum,preparing them for college application and admission.
  • Prepare students for the rigour of postsecondary education, admissions tests,applications and available financing to support advanced education and training.
  • Assist students to develop and follow individual career roadmaps.
  • Develop career portfolios, which include test and grade results, examples of student work, and resumes and cover letters to prospective employers.
  • Arrange job shadowing, work placements, and community-based learning programs to allow students to directly experience workplace situations.
  • Organize workshops, classes, focus groups, and special presentations focusing on job skills and personal development.
  • Professionals from the FAWE alumni and others in relevant fields will be invited to speak at various points of the career guidance process.
  • Provide specialized counselling and intervention services to provide students with individualized attention.
  • Develop and disseminate career guidance and counselling resources.

Qualification and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology or Education
  • Post-graduate certificate in career counseling
  • Proven experience in guidance and counseling in secondary schools andfor post-secondary institutions
  • A passion for helping youth and ability to work with people of all backgrounds (religious, gender, disability, social and economic)
  • Ethical, trustworthy, and able to inspire confidence in clients
  • Able to balance work and personal life to minimize stress
  • Communicates effectively with clients including being a good listener
  • Proven competence in written and spoken English.

The offer

FAWE Rwanda offers an attractive remuneration and benefits package including an employer-funded pension plan, medical insurance, gratuity, and leave provisions. The initial contract will be for a period of eight (8) months subject to a probationary period of 3 months.
