JOB DETAILS:
School-to-School International, a U.S.-based nonprofit organization, is seeking a Senior Literacy Specialist to join the Lusaka-based team to support Transforming Teacher Education, a five-year project funded by USAID.
Role:
The newly awarded Transforming Teacher Education is a five-year project funded by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and implemented in partnership with Florida State University. Its aim is to strengthen the capacity of Zambia’s pre-service teacher training institutions to improve student learning outcomes. The project will focus on aligning pre-service education with current, evidence-based practices in primary school and in-service education programs. School-to-School International is seeking a Senior Literacy Specialist to join the team in its Lusaka-based office.
Under the supervision of the Chief of Party, the Senior Literacy Specialist is responsible for technical assistance in the review and revision of teacher education programs and materials and ongoing capacity strengthening support to university and colleges of education (COE) lecturers. S/he will serve as the teacher pre-service education and basic literacy instruction technical resource person for the program based in Zambia and ensure the objectives of the program are met to the satisfaction of the targeted COEs and universities, teacher aspirants, education authorities, USAID, and the TTE consortium partners. The Senior Literacy Specialist is also expected to effectively supervise and strengthen the capacity of the team under her/his responsibility. The responsibilities of the Senior Literacy Specialist may include, but are not limited to, the following bullets. .
Responsibilities:
• Provide key technical leadership and support to TTE, including provision of technical assistance on standards, tools, and guidelines that will contribute to improved teacher pre-service education
• Promote high level of collaboration, communication, and cooperation with universities and COEs
• Strengthen university and COE staff capacity to deliver and maintain high-quality teacher pre-service education in basic literacy instruction.
• Bring coherence and synergy between the program and other USAID-funded education programs in Zambia
• Develop/introduce quality gender sensitive literacy instructional training, through innovative and existing strategies
• Assist with, prepare, and submit reports, work plans, and various project documents and deliverables in conjunction with USAID and consortium partners
• Develop effective models of cooperation/collaboration between Ministry of Education and universities/COEs

Qualifications:
• Master’s degree or higher in reading instruction, teacher education, international development or related field; Ph.D. preferred
• At least 15 to 20 years of experience providing technical support to education programs in sub-Saharan Africa or other resource-limited settings
• Expertise developing, implementing, and evaluating teacher education and early grade reading instruction programs
• Proven scholarship experience and publishing in early grade reading research and teacher education
• Working knowledge of and experience with USG-funded activity management, policies, and procedures
• Expertise advising on supporting and assessing students with disabilities
• Experience in writing teacher education curricula as well as developing teaching and learning materials for educators
• Experience using technology for trainings, meetings, and presentations (Zoom, Skype, WhatsApp, etc.)
• Prior experience working with the Zambian higher education sector strongly preferred
• Demonstrated ability to build consensus with government, partners, and local government structures as well as in university, college, and school settings
• Fluency in English
