Job Description
The Greater Kafue Ecosystem Coordinator will be responsible for strengthening the strategic direction and impact of the Zambian program, and overseeing the resource protection and wildlife monitoring activities in the Greater Kafue Ecosystem and corridors. The incumbent will also be required to carry out relevant administrative and financial duties. Core responsibilities are as follows:
GKE Projects
• Oversee and support the implementation of resource protection and wildlife monitoring activities in Zambia, according to well-defined annual work plans; as well as consolidate and grow these activities throughout Zambia according to Panthera’s Regional and Species Conservation Strategies, considering potential new conservation opportunities and needs.
• Along with the Community Conservation Coordinator, plan specific activities and interventions for the Greater Kafue Ecosystem and Zambia Corridors to achieve concrete objectives and goals from start to completion, involving deadlines, milestones and processes.
• Maintain close relationships with Panthera’s principal partners in Zambia, including the government, other NGOs and funding bodies, and foster new relationships with any such potential partners.
• Design staff workplans in coordination with Regional Director and provide regular and timely updates on progress and challenges to the Regional Director.
• Develop (or prolong) MOUs between Panthera and local government or NGO partners in Zambia.
Wildlife monitoring development and oversight
• Line manage the Wildlife Monitoring Coordinator and oversee the coordination and management of all assigned fieldwork related to carnivore monitoring within Zambia.
• Oversee and support the preparation of Zambian monitoring results, reports, papers and grant reports.
• Work with the Lion and Leopard Species Directors, conservation scientists, and the wider Conservation Science teams to ensure that monitoring activities are developed and implemented in Zambia that meet the Regional and Species strategy goals and objectives.
Resource Protection Management
• Oversee the coordination and management of all assigned activities related to Panthera’s resource protection management in Zambia.
• Support the preparation of Zambian resource protection strategy and overall operational planning documents, reports, and grant reports.
• Work with the Regional Director, Counter Wildlife Crime (CWC) team and wider conservation action teams to ensure that initiatives are developed and implemented in Zambia that meet the Species Strategy goals and objectives.
• Work with the Panthera CWC and Conservation Actions teams and partner organisations to coordinate and collaborate on interventions to tackle specific wildlife crime problems.
• Work with Panthera species programs and CWC and Impact Assessment teams to monitor and evaluate the impact of the resource protection activities.
• Work with the wider Panthera Organisation including the Communications and Business development team to build support for Panthera Zambia.
People Management
• In accordance with Panthera’s HR policies and procedures, facilitate succession management initiatives for project staff, i.e., support the growth and development of staff, specifically enhancing report writing and grant writing skills.
• Carry out Performance Management for staff and identify growth opportunities, according to Panthera’s HR policies and procedures.
• Participate in the recruitment of staff in Zambia.
Administration and Financial
• Coordinate and organise meetings for the projects, including stakeholder meetings and internal project management meetings, and report on those meetings.
• Work closely with other Coordinators and Managers, and partners on project updates, site visits, and general communication.
• Work with project staff to ensure project implementation is on time, target, and within budget (with the support of Panthera Finance Department).
• Oversee the stewardship, care and maintenance of the project equipment, including the vehicle, field and other equipment, and upkeep of associated records such as vehicle log books.
• Oversee the stewardship, maintenance and operation of Panthera infrastructure including Panthera deployment bases and camps in the GKE.
• Support the development and regular review of Panthera’s risk management procedures implemented in the Greater Kafue Ecosystem.
• Review staff expense reports and ensure reporting is in alignment to relevant project/grant budget.
• Financial reporting on all project expenditure and assist in the preparation and submission of financial reports as requested.
Business Development
• Support project proposal development, including the review of budgets.
• Assist with the development of funding proposals and strategy documents.
• In coordination with the Panthera Business Development team, support the development and implementation of a fundraising plan for Zambian projects.

Qualifications and Experience
• Master’s Degree in Conservation Ecology or Natural Resource Management.
• At least 5 years’ experience in managing field-based conservation projects, including wildlife monitoring.
• Successful track record of collaborating with government and other stakeholders in southern Africa, including donor relations.
• Experience with grant writing and reporting, including financial reporting.
• Ability to lead and manage multi-disciplinary teams.
• Full, clean manual driver’s license preferably with off-road driving experience.
• Experience living in a remote location for extended periods of time.
• Excellent written and spoken English.
• Knowledge of other local languages is a distinct advantage.
