JOB DETAILS:
Job Purpose
Provides high standard of prosthetic and orthotic care for children with disability. Works with CURE Zambia’s lead physiotherapist, medical director and the CURE network director of prosthetics and orthotics to develop CURE Zambia’s prosthetics and orthotics service.

Specific Duties
1. Undertakes clinical assessment and examination of patients to determine prosthetic/orthotic suitability in collaboration with the medical multidisciplinary team
2. Casts and/or measures patients to enable effective prosthetic/orthotic manufacture and fitting.
3. Performs plaster positive model rectifications as appropriate.
4. Specifies the design, componentry, materials and fabrication method of prostheses & orthoses to meet patients’ clinical needs.
5. Advises and maintains effective liaison with technical workshop personnel including assisting with training in order to ensure high quality devices are produced.
6. Evaluates and adjusts devices to ensure optimal fit, function, and mechanical integrity and safety.
7. Provides verbal, visual and written information, explanation and clinical advice to the patient and careers throughout treatment to ensure optimal use and care of devices.
8. Uses agreed standardized outcome measures to evaluate patient outcomes.
9. Participates in ward rounds to communicate prosthetic/orthotic plans and supports the medical team in providing holistic patient centered care.
10. Collaborates with the spiritual team to ensure that CURE values are upheld in the department and patient’s spiritual and emotional needs are met.
11. Attends the medical multidisciplinary team reviews as appropriate
12. Maintains accurate and comprehensive notes keeping a clinical record of interventions and adjustments made.
13. Demonstrates ongoing personal and professional development by undertaking relevant trainings including CME activities as may be organized inside or outside the hospital
14. Adheres to BCH and MOH standards of patient care, treatment protocols and documentation
15. Communicates effectively with all other BCH staff to ensure successful patient care from every discipline within the hospital
16. Identifies improvement and training needs and works with the CURE network director of P&O to develop and implement plans to address these.
17. Reports any malfunction of equipment to the immediate supervisor or appropriate person(s) as soon as possible
18. Represents the hospital at prosthetic/orthotic related activities as required
19. Performs any other related duties as may be assigned by Supervisor

Job Requirements
• Minimum of completed diploma in orthopedic technology from a recognized institution. Bachelor’s degree in prosthetics and orthotics is preferred
• Minimum 3 years clinical experience as orthopedic technologist or prosthetist/orthotist. Experience in pediatric rehabilitation and working with modular prosthetic components is desirable.
• Registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia
• Good communication skills with peers, workshop staff, other medical professionals, patients and their families
• Ability to handle or process confidential documents or material in an appropriate manner
• Ability to handle multiple tasks, establish priorities, and work independently.
