JOB DETAILS:
Who is Fight Inequality Alliance Zambia?
The Fight Inequality Alliance Zambia (FIA Zambia) is a coalition of organizations – among them rural, youth, labour, climate justice, women’s rights, urban, artists, land rights and social justice movements fighting inequality in Zambia. FIA Zambia works on the premise that the gap between the rich and poor adversely undermines access to social services and the protection of fundamental human rights. FIA Zambia was founded in Lusaka (at the Global Platform Zambia) in September 2018, with the objective to collectively advocate for a more equal and fair Zambia. The most affected; women, youth, persons living with disability, indigenous groups, and urban poor are on the frontlines of inequality and are at the forefront of our movement. The status quo needs to be reversed for us to achieve the just, equitable and sustainable country we need. We are coming together to organise for collective solutions to the root causes of the inequality struggles we face, and to leverage our collective strength to #fightinequality. FIA Zambia is building a movement to challenge privilege, counter the excessive concentration of power and wealth in the hands of a small elite, and advance a more just, equal and sustainable world.
Location: Lusaka

Purpose:
FIA Zambia is seeking a consultant/s to undertake analysis on the economic policy options that could be taken by the Zambian government and their potential impacts on fighting inequality. The country is at a crossroads, with an ongoing debt crisis, the impacts of Covid-19 on the economy, as well as the longer term structural issues that have resulted in spiraling levels of inequality.

The new government is considering and making policy choices that will affect the structure of the economy, and have huge impacts on people’s lives and the levels of inequality for the country for the next decade or more. At this critical juncture, FIA Zambia would like an analysis and assessment of the potential policy options available to the government, and an analysis of their potential impacts on structural inequality. This will inform the positions taken by the Alliance in these policy decisions, as well as inform our campaigning and advocacy.

Key Deliverables:
• Briefing meeting with FIA Zambia
• Research report/position paper
• Presentation of findings to FIA Zambia Steering Group, wider membership

Desirable:
● Willingness to take up media and other advocacy opportunities

Consultant Specification:
• Extensive experience of economic policy analysis on macroeconomic issues
• Experience and knowledge of quantitative research methodologies and economic modelling
• Well versed in national and international policy debates on inequality related issues
• Ability to communicate complex ideas simply and in clear language for both technical and non-technical audiences
• Experience working with civil society, and alignment with FIA Zambia’s mission, vision and values
