YLabs designs programs that address the key health challenges facing disadvantaged youth around the world. We work with national governments and local partner organizations to create, scale, and evaluate solutions co-designed with young people living in these communities. We bring a unique mix of human-centered design, adolescent medicine, and implementation science to the global problems facing youth. Founded in 2014 at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health, our work has been granted international innovation awards from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and the Packard Foundation, among others. We are based in California and currently work in thirteen countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and South America.

PROJECT DIRECTOR, RWANDA & USA

YLabs is seeking a project director to bring creativity and public health expertise to our team to design and scale social innovation projects that improve health and economic opportunity for young people globally. Working at the cutting edge of design for social impact with a team that combines expertise in health, economics and design, you’ll help launch, manage and evaluate innovations in adolescent health. In this role, you will work with young people and communities to design, evaluate and scale innovation for youth. Hand-in-hand with our partners, you will implement, evaluate, and scale-up successful solutions, building effective working relationships with communities and key stakeholders. As the project director, you will be supporting project planning, communications, partner relations, and leading our fieldwork with young people and their communities.

You are:

  • Looking for a new challenge in a senior role, with the opportunity to manage a cutting-edge project leveraging technology to reach youth;
  • Excited about the opportunity to establish a robust implementation team in Rwanda, in collaboration with our implementing partners;
  • Able to coordinate and manage the implementation of project activities, delivering quality work and accountability to donor expectations and milestones;
  • A natural collaborator who understands how to build strong relationships with our clients, partners, and donors;
  • Passionate about social impact, global health and youth. You have experience implementing solutions in resource-constrained environments;
  • Experienced in monitoring and evaluation, implementation science, mixed methods, process and outcome evaluation methodologies;
  • Able to easily communicate and envision concepts and ideas to team members, partners, and funders;
  • Highly organized and adapt at project management, work, operations and reporting;
  • Comfortable training and mentoring others;
  • Role initially based in Bay Area, subsequently in Kigali, Rwanda;
  • Able to work in fast-paced, dynamic start-up environment and comfortable with ambiguity;
  • Skillful in navigating different cultural and geographic contexts;
  • Proactive, detail-oriented and flexible.

You have:

  • 8-10 years work experience in project management in resource-constrained settings;
  • Exceptional communication skills with clients and beneficiaries;
  • Experience leading and supporting multi-disciplinary teams;
  • Exceptional written communication skills;
  • Worked or lived in Sub-Saharan Africa or Asia;

Skills and experience on building and fostering partnership relations;

  • Strong management and coordination skills with experience managing projects to deadlines;
  • Experience managing and monitoring multi-year project budgets and developing and tracking detailed project workplans;
  • Analysis of quantitative data, design of data collection tools (qualitative or qualitative); though there will be a dedicated M&E team to support this project;
  • Technical expertise in sexual and reproductive health and/ or HIV;
  • Graduate level training in public health or related discipline (including social sciences, medical anthropology, international development, economics, health management and policy, medicine etc.).

Desirable:

  • Experience managing USAID projects / multi-year projects in Sub Saharan Africa;
  • Expertise in human-centered design/design thinking;
  • Second language;
  • Previous experience working on health, education or employment programs;
  • Experience in applying research insights to create solutions to public health and development challenges;
  • Prototyping/making experience;
  • Basic knowledge of Keynote and/or design software.
