The INCREASE project’s goal is to address the major challenge of climate change that farmers, agribusinesses, and SMEs are facing. To achieve this, the project strengthens the adaptive capacity of agricultural and energy systems as well as the promotion of climate smart (CS) diversification practices and productive use of renewable energy.
The project works with the larger agribusinesses in Cotton, Dairy and Horticulture and covers Eastern, Central, Copperbelt, Lusaka, and Southern provinces, initially targeting to reach 11,300 smallholder farmers in the 3 value chains. While working in these value chains the project intends to
promote integration of renewable sources of energy such as Solar and Biogas energy both for household use and productive use (example for Productive use of biogas and bio slurry).
Furthermore, the project drives the uptake of bio digesters among smallholder farmers for biogas and bio slurry usage, in addition to other energy-focused interventions within the three value chains and the adoption of more and modern energy solutions for cooking, lighting and productive uses by 3,000 households. The project had started in January 2020 and will run till end 2022 (with a possible extension to 2023). As the project aims to address the major challenge of climate change that farmers, agribusinesses and SMEs are facing using a value chain approach, the project set up demonstration sites with full Increase models that demonstrate CSA practises and promotion of renewable energy for lead farmers/women groups in the 3 value chains. These farmers are in the from different locations and have already established Increase models and other identified demo plots that act as our field school for application of CSA practices in the three value chains. The set-up will demonstrate renewable energy application on underground water extraction and water efficiency for winter crop production and sustained fruit production using drip irrigation. The Solar pumping systems and drip irrigation kits will be set up in the seven (7) sites in the following provinces and districts as summarised below:
