JOB DETAILS:
The Role:
• The purpose of the role is to support the implementation of testing farmers’ biopesticide for fall armyworm management in Zambia. This is a temporary position for only one cropping cycle of the
maize crop. The short-term research assistant will conduct the following activities:
What You’ll Do:
• Promote a cost-effective model for producing and applying the FAW baculovirus mixture within an IPM system at farm scale in maize farming communities in Zambia
• Train smallholder farmers to produce and use the FAW baculovirus mixture in their maize fields
• Showcase the impact of the FAW baculovirus mixture to farmers and other stakeholders in communities
• Provide comprehensive reporting on farmers’ knowledge, attitudes, and field practices utilizing the baculovirus mixture, its yield advantage, and economic viability
• Contribute content to the production information, education, and communication materials on the FAW baculovirus mixture and its use by farmers in Zambia.
Deliverables
• Increased farmer’s awareness of the use of biopesticides in the management of pests like the FAW
• At least 500 farmers with skills in how to produce and use the FAW baculovirus mixture
• At least 3 field days involving various stakeholders including farmers, extensionists, agro-dealers, and students held at 3 sites
• A report documenting the farmers’ practices in the fields utilizing the baculovirus mixture and the yield advantage
• A report on the economic viability of production and use of the FAW baculovirus mixture
• A report on knowledge, attitudes, and practices of farmers towards the use of the FAW baculovirus mixture
About You:
• Minimum of a MSc degree in agriculture or biological science or a related field from a recognized university.
• Experience in conducting agricultural research trials, setting up demonstration plots, and data collection
• Previous farmer training experience
• Good communication skills both oral and written
• Ability to speak different local languages
• Good organizational and interpersonal skills
• Innovative and a good team player
