Research Fieldwork Assistant
M&ESURE Research and Evaluation is an evaluation and social science research consultancy based in Cape Town, South Africa. M&ESURE has been contracted to conduct an Effectiveness Review of six projects contributing in different ways to employment opportunities and income generation for youth in poor and marginalised communities in South Africa and Zambia on behalf of Misean Cara, an Irish Faith-based organization. To this end, research fieldwork assistance is required for a few days during August and September. The research fieldwork assistant will be required to conduct interviews with some staff members involved with the project, as well as participants of the projects (some interviews may have to take place telephonically). In addition to conducting interviews, research fieldwork assistants will also be required to complete an observation schedule and take photos of pre-determined aspects of the project. It is also expected that research fieldwork assistants collate, capture and write-up their interviews with participating individuals and visits to the sites.

Number of days: 2 days for site visits/ data collection; 3-5 days for data capturing, translations, transcriptions

Working under the direct supervision of M&ESURE’s Lead Evaluators, the incumbent will be responsible for the implementation of fieldwork responsibilities. Specifically, he/she will:
• Before the field visits:
o Participate in remote training on interview protocols to be followed;
o Translate interview questions provided into local languages;
o Prepare for the interview by learning the interview questions;
• During the field visits:
o Ensure that interviewees sign an attendance register (which will be provided by the evaluation consultants);
o Conduct and record interviews, each with one or two young people who participated in the project, lasting approximately 45-60 minutes each;
o Take 5-8 photographs at the site;
• After the field visits:
o Upload / e-mail all photos, interview recordings, and photos of signed attendance registers to a cloud-based storage folder, such as Dropbox or Google Drive;
o Complete the observation schedule and write-up comprehensive interview notes in English (using MS-Word);
o Within 5 working days after interviews, completed observation schedules and interview notes to be submitted to evaluation consultant via e-mail.

Education and experience required
It is required that the fieldworker has research experience or qualifications or has previously been involved in community work. Fieldworkers should have a shared understanding of community development; be reliable, trustworthy, warm and personable; have integrity; understand the role of faith in community development; understand how people in the community respond to faith-based activities in the community.
Technical competencies required
• Ability to converse fluently in local language(s);
• Good written English ability;
• Experience conducting interviews;
• Ability to accurately transcribe from recordings;
• Ability to accurately translate (if interview in local language) and transcribe into English;
• The current Covid-19 global pandemic has resulted in severe restrictions on movement around the world. Residential proximity to the fieldwork site is desired to reduce safety concerns relating to travel to the site;
Resources/equipment required • Has voice recorder OR cell phone with capability to record audio;
• Has camera OR cell phone with capability to take digital photographs of reasonable quality;
• Access to a printer to print out interview questions, and stationery for note taking (paper and pen/pencil);
• Access to computer and ability to type into Microsoft Word the interview notes in English;
• Access to internet (WIFI/data) and e-mail in order to submit photos, voice recordings and interview notes;

Safety considerations and protocols relating to Covid-19 will be detailed prior to the commencement of fieldwork. This includes the wearing of face masks for the entire duration of the fieldwork and regular hand sanitizing. It is preferred that interviews take place outdoors, weather dependant. As this position requires you to visit an organisation, applicants that have a known illness or comorbidities related to Covid-19 are advised to seriously consider their personal risk level. Due to the changing nature of the Covid-19 pandemic site visits may be deemed nonviable and converted to telephonic or virtual engagements. The Fieldwork Assistant would in this situation receive reimbursement for airtime.
