Understanding obstacles to growth in domestic giving in Zambia

Although the culture of giving exists in Zambia and the level of giving is poised to grow in the coming years, it is an acknowledged fact there are certain barriers to the growth in giving. Based on research conducted much of the development work in Zambia is donor driven as such communities in general are not used to driving their own development and leveraging their own resources. This has been confirmed by two studies led by ZGF – ‘Zambia giving trends 2017: An overview of Individual giving in Zambia’ and the 2019 ‘Report on Zambia Diaspora Philanthropy Study”. Therefore, this research will help ZGF understand how Zambian society views giving and help ZGF shape subsequent work in engaging with the private sector, government, and other organizations to deepen philanthropic giving in the country.
