JOB DETAILS:
Job Description (Roles and Responsibilities)
• The British High Commission (BHC) in Lusaka works on a range of exciting areas to promote the UK-Zambia relationship, including green and resilient economic development and social and human development.
• This position will sit within the BHC Economic Development and Green Growth (EDGG) Team, and also support the office’s second technical team, Governance, Political and Human Development (GPHD).
• The EDGG team drives the UK’s portfolio of work on private sector development and Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) promotion and facilitates impact. The team works to promote opportunities for UK companies in core sectors such as renewable energies, mining and financial services.
• EDGG has responsibility for the British High Commission’s relationship with international financial institutions in Zambia, including the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (WB) and Africa Development Bank (AfDB)
• EDGG also has responsibility for the climate and environment agenda and the team worked heavily on the upcoming COP28, the major climate conference. The team also works on a number of issues on the protection of nature and biodiversity- including counter-poaching and sustainable tourism.
• The postholder will provide economic advice to inform the British High Commission’s strategy and spending decisions, including advising the senior leadership team on ways to maximise the effectiveness and efficiency of the portfolio of interventions in Zambia.
• The postholder will support evaluations across a diverse range of programmes and conduct sectoral economic analysis.
• The postholder will establish relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders within the Government of Zambia, Civil Society Organisations, think tanks etc. and engage actively on economic issues to progress the objectives of the British High Commission.

Roles and responsibilities:
• Analytical deep-dives into key economic issues across various sectors of the Zambian economy.
• Presentation of macroeconomic analysis to the British High Commission’s Strategy and Country Boards to inform decision making and strategic direction of the office portfolio.
• Inputting into briefings for senior officials/ ministers.
• Developing strong relationships with key stakeholders in the economic sector including Government of the Republic of Zambia, Bank of Zambia, academics in Zambia and the UK, cooperating partner missions, etc.
• Evaluation support on annual reviews, programme design and Value for Money assessment to help to maximise the value and impact of our portfolio of programmes.
• Contributing to an effective team working environment through corporate contributions.

Essential qualifications, skills and experience
• A strong undergraduate degree in Economics
• At least three (3) years of work experience in a relevant field
• Excellent written and verbal English communication skills
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative.

Essential Economic Skills
Macro Economics: Being able to understand and explain the economy as a whole, including:
• growth measurement, trends, drivers, and diagnostics,
• fiscal policy, budgeting, taxation and debt,
• monetary policy and exchange rates and regulation.
Micro Economics: Being able to understand and explain the behaviour of firms or households including;
• importance of choices and incentives,
• demand, supply, markets and competition,
• core rationale for government intervention, core project appraisal skills, sectoral/market analysis.
Effective Communication for Economists: Being able to effectively communicate complex technical ideas, orally and in writing, to colleagues and stakeholders of different backgrounds.
Desirable qualifications, skills and experience
• A Masters with at least 50% economic component
• Experience in programme management
• Experience working as an economist in a High Commission or Embassy
