Director, Wildlife Rescue Program
Description

This position can be based in the Southern Africa region
The Wildlife Rescue Program Director will provide leadership for the effective and efficient development and implementation of IFAW’s Wildlife Rescue Program as informed by the Rescue Pillar Strategy and overall institutional strategy. The Director is responsible for developing the WR strategy, overseeing project development, and delegation of implementation to project managers. This position is accountable for overseeing the wildlife rescue staff and the budgeting, planning, monitoring and evaluation of all projects within the Wildlife Rescue portfolio. The Director also provides strategic leadership at the institutional level.

Role and Responsibilities
Strategic project development and implementation
• Guide the strategic development of global efforts in wildlife rescue and associated capacity building for partners and collaborators.
• Work closely with the Deputy Vice-President of Rescue and Country and Regional Directors in the ongoing identification of opportunities within specific countries and geographies. Support the efforts of Country Offices in animal rescue as related to wildlife rescue projects.
• Oversee all project budgets within WR, providing reforecasting and adaptive management in collaboration with project managers and program officers.
• Identify and develop strategic relationships with key global stakeholders, both governmental and non-governmental, to promote and incorporate IFAW approved and branded best practices for animal welfare and wildlife rescue into wildlife rescue and conservation efforts worldwide.
• Develop and/or oversee development of funding proposals in coordination with development
• Lead formulation of policies and practices regarding IFAW’s wildlife rescue work.
Monitoring, Evaluation, accountability, and learning
• Oversee WR projects to ensure projects plans are current and include PMEL aspects per current planning standards. Evaluate projects at scheduled intervals to measure impact and adaptively manage.
• Evaluate the team effectiveness and progress towards the achievement of outcomes, facilitate team self-evaluation and learning and ensure the ongoing measurement of outcomes and results.
• Oversee maintenance of records, data and reporting as required by IFAW leadership and funders.
• Develop and oversee research and submission of scientific materials from the work of the WR team and/or in collaboration with partners, including publications in peer-reviewed journals where appropriate.
Management
• Manage Wildlife rescue staff, providing institutional vision and technical guidance. Build a cohesive team of professionals to support and implement Wildlife Rescue projects and initiatives.
• Provide opportunities for development and growth; perform annual performance evaluations and goal setting with direct reports.
Communications
• Promote open communication within the Wildlife Rescue team and across projects.
• Ensure regular and effective communication with the Deputy Vice-President of Rescue; produce regular reports and updates.
• Work closely with all program directors and FAW departments (communications, finance, development, etc.) to ensure optimal flow of information between programs and departmental teams.
• Maintain a broad (and often detailed) understanding of IFAW’s extensive advocacy / campaign initiatives. Identify and implement cross-programmatic strategies among other Programs and campaigns.
• Act as a spokesperson for the Program, representing the organization to, and building positive relationships with, NGO’s, politicians, Government officials, business representatives and other key contacts. Represent IFAW to supporters and major donors with a view to encouraging their continued support of IFAW.
• Serve as an IFAW brand ambassador in all external contexts, promoting IFAW and all our work.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
• At least 5 years experience managing a regional or global portfolio. Relevant experience in wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, animal welfare, or closely related field and advanced degree in biological sciences, or related field preferred.
• Strong project management skills and experience with the ability to manage and prioritize a large workload.
• Wildlife rescue, rehabilitation, release, and post release monitoring experience preferred. Experience in elephant and/or large mammal rescue, rehabilitation, and release a plus.
• Strong leadership skills and good team management skills and experience.
• Excellent organizational and team-building skills.
• Strong problem-solving skills, able to effectively analyze problems and provide creative workable solutions.
• Excellent communicator, both verbally and in writing. Ability to communicate effectively with people (both internally and externally) from varying educational, social, and cultural backgrounds.
• Able to work interdependently, optimizing the skills available within the team.
• High level of professionalism – the mix of dependability, initiative, industry, flexibility, and ability to make sound judgments. Ability to adapt to working in varied environments and to handle high stress situations.
• Skills in one or more relevant languages preferred.
• Commitment to animal welfare and promoting IFAW’s mission preferably with experience in the field of animal welfare or conservation.
• Able and willing to travel globally.
