About the Position
The Instrumentation Chemist will work at the ALS Zambia – Kansanshi site.
The position will be responsible for:
Compliance:
- Practice and drive the ALS Health and Safety Foundation Standards.
- Practice the ALS company core values.
- Abide by the ALS company policies and procedures.
- Abide by local legislative requirements at all times.
Efficient and Effective Operations:
- Work with the quality systems staff to ensure compliance to ISO17025 requirements
- Carry out routine analyses as required using spectroscopic instruments.
- Ensure QPs, QWIs, SOPs or client specific procedures are followed
- Advise on inventory, consumable purchases and maintaining adequate stock levels
- Remain client focused by exceeding their expectations
- Assistance in general laboratory duties.
- Optimize turnaround time and ensure accurate, timely results are achieved and maintained
- Ensure the quality and integrity of procedures used is maintained so as to produce a product that meets the quality objectives
- Measure, record, and act upon QA/QC procedures and results immediately by providing feedback
- Regular monitoring of quality
- Ensure the quality of work performed is maintained at a level that meets or exceeds acceptable standards
- Ensure Quality Systems are adhered to in performance, review, and reporting of laboratory data and communicate all quality issues.
- Support Quality Department and Continuous Improvement Processes.
- Ensure business is conducted in accordance with Core Values:

About you
To be successful in this role you will have:
- Chemistry/Science/Geology/Engineering Diploma or Degree from a recognized University or Institution and or in-depth understanding and knowledge of Chemistry or Geology.
- 1 year Laboratory experience
- Hands-on knowledge of operating spectroscopic instruments ICP-OES, AAS
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English is a mandatory requirement.
- Good interpersonal skills and effective in working in a multi-cultural environment.
- Sound technical knowledge of Geochemical analytical techniques

Ensure all routine maintenance tasks are attended to timeously to ensure minimal downtime on all laboratory instrumentation and auxiliary equipment Help create, repair and maintain all components, equipment, machinery and devices within the Kansanshi operations Assemble, install and maintain appliances, apparatus and fixtures using hand and power tools Inspect equipment, and components to identify hazards, defects, and the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance Plan layout and installation of equipment and fixtures. Diagnose malfunctioning systems, apparatus, and components, using test equipment and hand tools, to locate the cause of a breakdown and correct the problem Ensure preventative maintenance schedules are in place and adhered to, to ensure minimal instrument breakdowns Plan preventative maintenance schedules periodically to ensure smooth running of the laboratory facility Ensure regular housekeeping inspections to assess the day to day up keep of the site and to ensure support equipment is in functional conditions at all times. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed Maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations Ensure ALS Health and Safety policies and procedures are adhered to at all times
A Minimum of a Maintenance Artisan Diploma or equivalent from a recognized University or Institution 3-5 years Laboratory experience Good understanding of GEMS and maintenance equipment Attention to detail and work under pressure High level of integrity and excellent communicating skills Ability to multi task and meet challenging deadlines Proven people management experience, leading, managing, directing and motivating a team Sound decision making, problem solving and preventive measures skills Excellent numerical and analytical skills Good Knowledge in the mining industry (Jaw crushers, Mills, Dust Extractors, Scrubbers etc.) Able to prioritize and give accurate feedback on time High standards of work ethic and attention to detail
