Individual consultant contract to draft the 5-year Strategic Plan for the International School of Lusaka
Start date 10 January 2023; anticipated duration 10 months
The International School of Lusaka is a leading international school established in 1963 in Lusaka, for children aged 2 to 18 years. Our community is built on the principles of mutual respect and understanding, and we strive to ensure that all learners feel welcome, safe, included, and valued. There are over 600 students representing more than 50 nationalities. ISL is committed to the development of internationally-minded citizens who aspire to make the world a better place.
ISL is accredited by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) since 1997. The school is also a member of the Association of International Schools in Africa (AISA) and the Independent Schools Association of Zambia (ISAZ). The school is an IB World school and offers International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (IB PYP), the International Middle Years Curriculum (IMYC) and the International General and Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) curriculum, and the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP).
The consultant will support ISL management and the Board of Governors to develop a long-term strategy that will contribute to the implementation of the ISL Guiding Statements. The consultant will work closely with the Head of School, the Primary and Secondary Principal, the team coordinating the self-assessment of the CIS, and the Policy and Planning Committee. Building on the retreat as well as the different committees linked to the CIS re-accreditation, the consultant will draft a 5-year strategy for ISL with clear objectives, a monitoring framework, as well as the first annual workplan. The consultant will also develop the policy for the long-term planning of the school, and the procedures on how to link it to annual planning and budgeting.

Specific Tasks
The consultant is expected to perform the following tasks:
Inception meeting at the start of the contract
Desk review of key documents, reports, and policies (January 2023)
Interviews with key staff members, board members, parents, and students (January to February 2023) – in country for about 10 days
Develop the school’s policy (1 page – to be included in the Board Policy Manual) and procedure for long-term planning, including a mechanism for implementing the Strategy. (March 2023)
Regular consultation with the coordination team leaders for each of the CIS domains being reviewed (January to May 2023)
School visit and workshop on draft Strategic Plan (September 2023) – in country for about 5 days
Drafting of the Strategic Plan, as well as a narrative version of max. 10 pages (September – October 2023)
School-wide validation of the Strategic Plan (November 2023)
Final Strategic Plan and narrative version for wider circulation (end of November 2023).
Work Relationships
The consultant will report directly to the Head of School and will work closely with the Board of Governors.
Desired competencies, technical background and experience
Specialised skills and/or training required for the assignment:
Advanced University degree in education
At least 10 years of demonstrated expertise in the areas of education
At least 5 years of demonstrated experience in strategic planning, and developing similar plans for international schools.
Strong organisational skills; capacity to prioritise and manage a diverse range of projects and activities.
Excellent editorial, writing, reviewing and editing skills in English.
Ability to work effectively with minimal direction and a high degree of independence, while taking onboard routing feedback
Fluency in English (written and spoken) is required.

The following general conditions shall apply.
Workplace: Home-based, with occasional travel to Lusaka
Payment to be made based on (6) deliverables, rather than working days
Financial offer (in USD) should include all costs related to the consultancy, including travel (including 2 missions to Lusaka).
