One Acre Fund supplies smallholder farmers with the financing and training they need to grow more food and earn more money. Instead of giving handouts, we invest in farmers to generate a gain in farm income.
One Acre Fund runs a pilot program in Zambia’s Central Province.
Our Zambia pilot is exploring ways we can help farmers improve harvests on larger plots of land, which are common in the country. Our office in Zambia is located in Kabwe, the capital of the Central Province.
We serve smallholder farmers. In everything we do, we place Farmers First.
Three farmers till their land together in Rwanda
Farmers are the key to ending hunger and poverty in our lifetime. Poverty today is concentrated in one profession: farming. Most people living on $1 a day are farmers.
In Sub-Saharan Africa, more than 50 million families earn a living from small farms, which produce 80 percent of the continent’s food. But harvests still lag far behind the rest of the world.
This is a huge opportunity. Farmers who use optimal seed and agriculture techniques can grow much more on the same plot of land. We just need to get proven tools’ in farmers hands.
What We Do - Farmers First Graphic
One Acre Fund supplies farmers with everything they need to grow more food and earn more money. Most farmers in Sub-Saharan Africa live in just eight countries -- Nigeria, Ethiopia, and the six countries of the Lake Victoria basin -- and we operate in all of them.
With more productive farms, farmers can feed their families and sell any surplus. They can plant valuable crops, like trees, and build assets over time. With more income, farmers can invest in their children’s education and build businesses in their communities.
Farming is the engine of the continent’s development. When we make it more productive, we provide millions of families a path to prosperity.
Our Model
Market-based strategies to fight rural poverty.
Rural poverty is complex, and there is no single solution to the problems farmers face. That’s why One Acre Fund takes a holistic, long-term approach. We offer a complete bundle of services, using a market-based model that helps our organization remain financially sustainable and expand to reach more and more farmers every year.
One Acre Fund Program Model Chainlink
Here’s how our model works:
Asset-Based Loans. Farmers receive high-quality seeds and fertilizer on credit, and we offer a flexible repayment system that allows them to pay back their loans in any amount throughout the loan term.
Delivery. We deliver inputs to locations within walking distance of every farmer we serve.
Training. Farmers receive training throughout the season on modern agricultural techniques.
Market Facilitation. We offer crop storage solutions and teach farmers about market fluctuations, so that they can time crop sales to maximize profits.
Every link in this chain is important—if one is missing, then the others won’t have as much impact. One Acre Fund provides all of these services together, enabling farmers to significantly increase their incomes and build paths to prosperity.
