About Amethyst
Purple Amethyst comes in different shades from pale lilac to deep, intense royal purple and brownish to vivid. It has been admired throughout the ages for its stunning beauty and legendary powers to stimulate, and soothe the mind and emotions. It is also believed to have healing powers, attract positive energy and provide protection. Amethyst is the birthstone for February and gem for 6th and 17th wedding anniversary. It is a semi-precious stone in today’s classifications, but to the ancients it was a “Gem of Fire,” a Precious Stone associated with royalty, at times in history was worth as much as a Diamond. These unique properties and its outstanding beauty have continued to make amethyst one off the most sort after gemstones even in modern times.
Kariba Amethyst
Our rough amethyst comes in different sizes and ranges in hue from pale red-violet to deep violet and may be transparent of opaque. It is sometimes layered with white quartz as Chevron or Dog teeth Amethyst. The Kariba Amethyst crystals can be left natural, tumbled, polished, cabochon or faceted. Over the years it has also been used for ornaments, stone tops, and as materials for other products. The fine premium amethyst only found in Zambia, has been known for its unique deep, royal purple colour with red flashes. It has been used for high end designer jewellery and at times has been worth almost as much a diamond. Customized and processed products can be made available on special request. The Kariba Minerals Ltd, Mapatizya mine has been in operation in the Zimba district region for over fifty years, producing amethyst that is widely recognized for its high quality. Worldwide, it is one of the oldest mines for semi-precious stones and one of the largest sources of quality amethysts. Kariba Minerals Ltd is well aware that mining operations have a direct impact on the daily lives of the local people, and therefore the company actively participates in the development of the area by training and employing local workers and investing in the development and construction of infrastructure. Kariba’s social responsibility toward our local community is at the heart of our plans.
Kariba Minerals Ltd is a major economic development stakeholder in the Mapatizya community, and what the local population contributes to the company in the form of labour is reinvested in the community.
Infrastructure
A number of facilities have been built to foster improved quality of life for the community. A new police station was opened recently. Schools have been built to provide children from 6 to 16 with access to quality elementary school education. Since workplace health and safety is an important issue for Kariba Minerals, the company supported the construction of a medical centre. The clinic treats a number of people every day and provides the entire local community with access to fast and effective medical care. The roads and bridges are regularly maintained by Kariba Minerals Ltd. The company supports the construction and upkeep of small dams to assist in local subsistence farming. Kariba also drills and maintains wells to ensure that the people have access to potable water.
Job creation
In addition to over 200 workers who work in the mine, Kariba Minerals has helped create several jobs related to infrastructure construction and operations. Over 3000 people have been supported directly or indirectly by the mine for many years.
