Job title: Agronomist (Zambia / Blueberries / Soil / Quality / Production)

Job Description
United Exports is looking for an experienced Agronomist to join the team at our farm in Zambia. Reporting to the Technical Director and the main purpose of this role is to focus on the increase of soil productivity and improved fruit nutrition and quality.

Key Performance Outputs
• Developing better planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques, improving crop yield, and solving problems.
• Use scientific methods to trial and evaluate different treatments to achieve the best possible results.
• Researching and promoting agricultural strategies to counter the effects of changes in soil, climate, weather, and pest damage.
• Visiting fields to collect seed, plant, and soil samples.
• Testing samples for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes.
• Assisting with the plant sourcing, testing, and selection.
• Keeping detailed records regarding fields, customers, crops, and samples.
• Generating reports and presenting findings to management, clients, or other interested parties.
• Conducting training on products and techniques through educational presentation
• Managing teams of scientists while conducting field visits or laboratory work
• Developing planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
• Test and trial new fertiliser products to achieve maximum yield and obtain best fruit quality.
• Assist with the designing of irrigation schedules.
• Train and support growers to effectively apply all irrigation and fertigation practices and schedules
• Use scientific methods to trail and evaluate different treatments to achieve the best possible results and implement on all farms.
• Test and trail new fertiliser products to achieve maximum yield and obtain best fruit quality.
• Assist with the designing of irrigation schedules.
• Train and support growers to effectively apply all irrigation and fertigation practices and schedules.
• Promote better and standardised farming practice across all farms in the Group

Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
• A relevant tertiary degree in BSc Horticulture with post graduate degree in Agronomy.
• 5 years’ relevant experience.

Knowledge:
• Awareness of industry trends, technology and developments.
• Blueberry experience will be of an advantage.
• Manage trails and do necessary report writing.

Skills:
• Strong computer literacy: MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook).
• Strong people management, relationship building and interpersonal relations skills.
• Excellent planning and organisational skills.
• Excellent communication skills, verbal and written.
• Strong research, decision making, problem solving and attention to detail skills
