Analytical Services Specialist
Job Summary:
Develop quality management systems for the laboratory in accordance with the ISO; 17025. To plan, organize, coordinate, direct and manage a range of activities in the laboratory to ensure effective and efficient operations with due regard to employee occupational health and safety. Cultivates and maintain relationships with key internal and external customers to ensure provision of the highest level of service. Responsible for equipment availability in the laboratory. Coordinating and managing financial, human and material resources of the laboratory in compliance with company policies and industry standards.

Duties and Responsibilities
• Liaises with contractors and subcontractors to ensure preventative and corrective maintenance on analytical laboratory equipment is performed as required.
• Works with Analytical laboratory and other METS staff members to establish consistent lab practices and ensure ISO 17025 lab accreditation is obtained, maintained by ensuring continuous improvement to the system.
• Cultivates and maintain relationships with key internal and external customers to ensure provision of the highest level of service.
• Overseeing the external proficiency testing programmes and carrying out investigations into any failures from external proficiency testing or internal quality control schemes in order to establish whether any effect on customer results and implement effective corrective action to prevent a reoccurrence.
• Supervise Chemists and Technicians, prioritize, plan, schedule and execute analytical testing in a timely manner, review abnormal results to find the cause of irregularities and ensure results are of highest accurate.
• Responds to inquiries with unsatisfied customers, researching discrepancies to see if an error was made and explaining any resulting corrective procedures.
• Coordinates and ensures all requisite consumables are adequately stored in the lab by monitoring scheduled stock taking in comparison with volumes of processed samples. Replenishing inventory through procurement and avoid operation disruptions. Ensuring the elimination of wastage at all levels.
• Identifying risks to the business and providing mitigation measures to eliminate them and ensuring the profit margins of the business is within company expectations.
• Exploring and harnessing potential business opportunities through participation in marketing and visits and provide necessary quotations.
• Coordinating with accounts department daily on all outstanding debtors/invoices and ensuring that all jobs are charged in the system and monitoring action on agreed areas of concern.
• Author and/or review laboratory relevant documentation, such as analytical methods, work instructions, test specifications, test reports ensuring the required accuracy and quality.
• Monitor and measure metrics and give timely status updates to management through scheduled reports both external (clients) and internal: certificate results, daily, weekly, monthly and quarterly reports.
• Lead replacement procurement process, including generation of sustaining capital estimates for all analytical lab equipment.
• Identify and drive laboratory improvements towards a health and safe laboratory environment through ensuring compliance to all company policies, procedures and regulatory requirements.
• Management of staff, ensure that employees receive training, mentoring guidance to ensure their continuous professional development, participating in staff appraisals and performance reviews to meet the operational needs of the business.

• Monitors progress and oversees management of Integrated Case Management activities in order to ensure sustained reduction of geo mean blood lead levels to less than 25µg/dL.

Education and experience
• Grade 12 Certificate
• Degree in Chemistry or related discipline and relevant experience of quality systems or suitable relevant experience in laboratory role.
• Must have worked in a laboratory and in a quality management role for at least 5 years
Key knowledge, attributes, skills and abilities
• Excellent working knowledge of analytical laboratories accredited to ISO: 17025.
• Instrumental analytical chemistry, specific to metals and minerals analysis and/or water analysis.
• Experience with assay troubleshooting, data analysis and process/product investigations is preferred.
• Ability to work with minimum supervision and take initiatives.
• Timeline/Deadline driven work ethics.
• Demonstrated ability to work efficiently independently; as well as in a team-based environment to organize & manage projects with multiple priorities; and assigned tasks.
• Effective team player and ability to collaborate with cross functional teams.
• Excellent communication skills, leadership skills, interpersonal skills, hands on analytical skills.
• Good computer skills, word, excel, LIMS and excellent analytical skills.
