Mission and objectives

Context
• In support of the Government of Zambia, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has embarked on the implementation of a five-year Country Programme Document (CPD) 2023-2027. UNDP works with the Government and people of Zambia to achieve the Vision 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and implementation of the 8th National Development Plan. UNDP focuses on areas that have a multiplier effect through a targeted build-up of capacities, policies, the creation of dialogue space, and scalable downstream interventions. Proposed downstream interventions seek to provide platforms for citizen engagement in democratic processes and facilitate access to skills, knowledge, and new technologies for increased income generation. The Communications Unit enhances programme and operations visibility, advocates for key issues and areas of concern, and engages with the beneficiary audiences towards meeting programme objectives and stimulating action to fulfill the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. It focuses on clear and effective messaging to increase the visibility and impact of projects in the Country Office (CO). The unit documents the status of projects and its contribution to development and the SDGs, raising awareness among the CO’s stakeholders and encouraging support of the project’s activities and outcomes. The team produces and promotes tools (websites, publications, social media content, campaigns, videos, etc.) for corporate identity and to highlight project activities and successes support.
Task description
Within the delegated authority and under the supervision of Communications Analyst or his/her designated mandated representative(s), the Communication Assistant will undertake the following tasks: Support elaboration and implementation of the CO publications strategy and plan based on the corporate publications policy:
• Contribute to the coordination and management of all CO events including launches and campaigns, publications, and web activities, including content management, norms for photography, video production, publishing, design, liaison with printers and other suppliers to oversee production and supervision of publications dissemination;
• Provide support for CO projects and events to boost visibility and business development. Support the management of the UNDP CO website and digital media platforms:
• Support the management of the office website based on corporate requirements in cooperation with the ICT team and relevant staff members;
• Contribute to generation, preparation and editing of content for the web site including the CO Exposure page to ensure material is consistent and up to date;
• Assist to identify storylines for publications and articles contributing to debates on key development issues and addressing problematic coverage. Outreach:
• Assist to design, prepare, and disseminate the CO newsletter to donors and other relevant partners to support projects;
• Support to disseminate communication materials and media mobilization through a regularly updated and populated contact database;
• As part of a team, ensure collection of stories graphically and pictorially to ensure captivating imagery of project activities; Knowledge Management:
• As part of a team, facilitates knowledge building and knowledge sharing for CO Staff and external groups focusing on the achievement of the following results: Identification and synthesis of best practices and lessons learned directly linked to programme country goals and activities; Contributions to knowledge networks and communities of practice including corporate communications repositories and Professional growth through active learning.
Requirements
Required experience
0 years of experience in Corporate Communications, Journalism, Research, Analysis, and/or Public Information, or other relevant programmes;
• Experience in developing video and photographic materials and commissioning filming in-house is an advantage;
• Demonstrated interest and or experience in designing and implementing communication and/or media outreach plans in support of overall corporate goals is desirable;
• Demonstrated interest and or experience in developing content that clearly communicates development ideas for digital media platforms, including websites and social media;
• Excellent oral and written skills;
• Accuracy and professionalism in document production and editing;
• Excellent interpersonal skills; culturally and socially sensitive; ability to work inclusively and collaboratively with a range of partners, including grassroots community members, religious and youth organizations, and authorities at different levels; familiarity with tools and approaches of communications for development;
• Ability to work and adapt professionally and effectively in a challenging environment; ability to work effectively in a multicultural team of international and national personnel;
• Solid overall computer literacy, including proficiency in various MS Office applications (Excel, Word, etc.) and email/internet; familiarity with database management; and office technology equipment;
• Excellent command of content production software such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite packages, Affinity Creative Suite packages, and/or Corel Creative Suite packages, amongst others is an added advantage;
• Have affinity with or interest in poverty eradication, sustainable structural transformation, the SDGs and Agenda 2063, volunteerism as a mechanism for durable development, and the UN System.
