• Mission and objectives
• UNICEF helps build a world where the rights of every child are fully realized. It is our conviction that nurturing and caring for children are the cornerstones of human progress. UNICEF was created in 1946 to work with others to overcome the obstacles that poverty, violence, disease and discrimination place in a child’s path. It has global authority to influence decision-makers, and a wide variety of partners at grassroots level to turn the most innovative ideas into reality. For 70 years, UNICEF has been working on the ground in 190 countries and territories to promote children’s survival, protection and development. The world’s largest provider of vaccines for developing countries, UNICEF supports child health and nutrition, good water and sanitation, quality basic education for all boys and girls, and the protection of children from violence, exploitation, and AIDS. UNICEF is funded entirely by the voluntary contributions of individuals, businesses, foundations and Governments.
Context
• Currently, Zambia faces a triple burden of malnutrition, manifesting as both under and over-nutrition, as well as micronutrient deficiencies which contribute to morbidity and mortality across all phases of life. Improving the quality of care requires various inputs such as protocols and job aids. Despite the availability of training, it is well known that due to limited resources, it is not possible to train all staff in in-service training and further staff turnover usually results in the need for more training of health workers at various service delivery points. The provision of job aids helps in addressing gaps in limited knowledge on provision of quality nutrition services. These tools provide the required information for the health worker community volunteer to perform tasks. It also helps to improve efficiency and quality of care as it reduces error rates and the cost of transfer of knowledge through training and time spent away from the service delivery point. To enhance learning that will improve approaches, the incumbent will support the Nutrition Section with development of job aids and protocols as well as documentation of learning and success stories related to the nutrition of children and mothers under the Maternal Infant and Young Child Nutrition (MAIYCN) and Integrated Management of Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) programmes. Documentation will include stunting reduction (high-impact nutrition-specific interventions) and micronutrient deficiency control, management of severe wasting, nutrition in emergencies as well as evidence generation and advocacy in view of supporting Government systems and services and for use by the UNICEF Zambia Country Office.
