Overview
• The position of Conservation Education Manager (CEM) is primarily one of coordination of the Conservation Education Programme (CEP), as well as overseeing running the Aspiring Conservation Leader (ACL) Programme. The CEM supervises an education team comprising a Community Outreach Coordinator (COC), Youth Leadership Coordinator (YLC), Senior Conservation Educator (SCE), Community Conservation Educators (CCEs), Outreach Education Assistants (OEAs) and interns.
• The CEM must be capable of compiling and delivering appropriate, informative, innovative and fun lessons and activities to school pupils in what can sometimes (though not always) be challenging physical environments that include poor classrooms, no electricity, crowds of onlookers, insufficient desks, extreme heat etc. Teaching is all in English, but it is the second language for the children of the area.
• The position is for two years. Foreign nationals must be issued with an employment permit by the Zambian Department of Immigration and must comply with their rules and regulations.
A. Role Description
1. Conservation Education Programme
The CEM will:
· Ensure timetables are prepared and distributed to local schools at the start of each school term for daily sessions in the Conservation Clubs (Junior and Senior).
· Oversee curriculum development and lesson planning for the Conservation Clubs in schools in the Chipembele programme, in conjunction with the COC.
· Regularly monitor the programmes and performance of the COC and the CCEs.
· Maintain monitoring records of programmes according to Chipembele’s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning framework and submit information when required to the COC for evaluation.
· Oversee the training and capacity building of the COC to further develop their professional skill sets.
· Provide training and capacity building for CCEs to enhance their professional development.
· Oversee lesson planning for CCEs for Club sessions in schools and community groups.
· Oversee the Mobile Conservation Education Outreach Programme, which takes the conservation education programme into remote communities and is headed/facilitated by the COC.
· Organise and facilitate field trips into South Luangwa National Park for students.
· Broadly oversee the weekly club meetings and research field trips led by Zambia Carnivore Programme staff.
· Coordinate with the centre manager to ensure the smooth running of the Centre programme.
· Oversee ‘Nature Nights’ camping excursions for small groups of selected students for several days during the school holidays.
· Organise an annual environmental campaign in the community, driven by the students.
· Manage budgets and funds for special programmes and submit spreadsheets and receipts to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
· Manage and track Education Team attendance and submit to CEO for payroll and reports.
· Coordinate annual Conservation Awards event.
· Maintain relationships and liaise with key stakeholders, particularly the participating schools and partnered organisations.
· Oversee any volunteers and interns serving in the Conservation Education and Outreach Programme.
2. Aspiring Conservation Leaders programme.
The CEM will:
· Assist and empower the Youth Leadership Coordinator to manage and facilitate the ACL programme.
· Help facilitate excursions for the ACLs.
· Supervise the YLC to ensure that the programme continues to grow and develop and maintain a very high standard.
3. General Administration Duties
The CEM will:
· Keep full and accurate records of all activities for the above programmes and activities.
· Maintain a high-quality pictorial record of activities within the programme for use in reports to donors and supporters and regularly update Chipembele’s social media pages and website.
· Submit monthly written reports and special programme reports to the CEO.
· Assist the CEO with grant applications
· Conduct/oversee annual performance reviews for all staff under his/her position.
4. Reporting/Working Relationships
The CEM will:
· Act as the line supervisor for the COC, SCE, YLC COAs and the CCEs and any Education-based volunteers or interns for the CEP.
· Take direction from and report directly to the CEO of CWET in all matters directly related to the conservation education work, human resources, finances, day-to-day logistics and general project management.
B. General Attributes and experience
1. Qualifications:
· Minimum bachelor’s degree education in a relevant field (e.g., biology, ecology, environmental management, environmental education etc.)
2. Essential skills and experience
· Minimum of 10 years of conservation/ community/ education/ sensitization experience.
· 5 years in a managerial role.
· Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
· Proven strong leadership skills.
· Excellent computer skills and proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
· Experience in financial record keeping, budget planning and management.
· Excellent English (oral and written).
· Current valid driver’s licence for car.
3. Other Skills/Experience/Aptitudes
· A passion for wildlife and conservation and respect for all wildlife.
· Flexibility and willingness to work in remote areas in challenging conditions with long hours when required.
· Experience in Monitoring and Evaluating an advantage.
· Innovation and creativity to improve aspects of the programme.
C. Job Benefits
· Private, furnished, and equipped office.
· Salary package including annual salary, fully equipped and furnished accommodation, and personal use of a 4WD vehicle.
· 30 days annual leave p.a.
D. Other Conditions
· If the successful applicant is not a Zambian citizen or resident, they will be required to satisfactorily fulfil the legal requirements of the Ministry of Immigration for entry into Zambia and would be subject to approval of Zambian employment permit.
· A police clearance certificate for working with children and/or vulnerable clients is required from the CEM’s country of origin, dated within 6 months of the application.
· A current valid and full driver’s licence is essential. Experience of 4 wheel off road driving would be an advantage.
· There will be an initial 3-month probationary period. After reciprocal agreement a 21-month contract will be offered.
· All air fares, other travel expenses and relocation costs at the job start-up are at the CEM’s expense.
· Full medical insurance with medical evacuation cover for emergencies is essential and must be obtained at the CEM’s cost.
· A flexible approach to working hours is required; some out of hours work and travel out of the area are inevitable from time to time.
