Background:
The USAID Zambia Accessible Markets for Health (ZAM-Health) Activity is a five-year project to expand the availability and accessibility of high-quality health products and services in the private sector, improve health knowledge, and increase the adoption of healthy behaviours. The program will employ private sector approaches such as marketing, social franchising, and partnerships with for-profit entities to achieve these outcomes. USAID ZAM-Health is implemented by John Snow Health Zambia (JSH) with JSI Research & Training Institute, Inc. (JSI), Media 365, and PharmAccess.

Description
The Environmental Management Coordinator shall be the overall responsible person for the management of medical waste generated in all project operational sites. This entails management of the entire value chain from points of waste generation, segregation, transportation, disposal, and decontamination.

Specific Duties
Specifically, the Environmental Management Coordinator shall perform the following duties:
• Collect and interpret GRZ policies on medical waste management and medical waste management in particular;
• In line with the national medical waste management plan, spearhead the development and dissemination of the medical waste management plan for USAID ZAM-Health;
• Develop a capacity building plan and programme and support trainings and mentorship on medical waste management for both technical and support staff and volunteers;
• Represent USAID ZAM-Health on all medical waste management technical working group meetings and other such meetings whenever they are called;
• Working together with the project QA/QI Advisor, provide internal QA/QI interventions in relation to medical waste management at the ZAM-Health Supported sites;
• In consultation with unit heads, identify and train waste management focal point persons in respective service areas e.g. HIV services, VMMC, ART, MNCH, FP;
• Ensure that every project site has a trained team leader and that they are equipped with the necessary tools for medical waste management;
• Work with regional managers and other specialists to identify institutions with functional incinerators and advise the project leadership on the signing of MOUs on waste management between USAID ZAM-Health and other institutions;
• Work with regional managers to maintain cordial relationships between the ZAM-Health project sites and collaborating institutions on medical waste management;
• Develop and use surveillance system to monitor adherence to standard operating procedures (SOPs) on medical waste management in all USAID ZAM-Health operational sites;
• Conduct supportive supervisory visits and mentorship in medical waste management at hub and site levels;
• Compile lessons learnt and share them with other project staff;
• Develop at least two(2) cost-effective innovations on medical waste management;
• From time to time briefs the project Director on the status of medical waste management in all USAID ZAM-Health.
• Actively participate in project quarterly, semi-annual and annual report writing
• Implement and adhere to JSH’s personnel, finance, operations and fraud management policies.
• Conduct any other duties assigned by the supervisor.

Qualifications:
• Must have minimum of a diploma or degree in environmental health r equivalent from a recognized college or university;
• A bachelors or master’s degree is preferred.
• At least 5 years’ relevant experience in medical waste management.
• Must be registered with the Health Professions Council of Zambia;
• Must be very conversant with laws and policies governing environmental waste management in Zambia;
• Must be a team player;
• Must have excellent communication skills , both oral and written;
• Must be competent in the use of computer programs – word, excel, and PowerPoint.
• Must be willing to travel frequently, in country.

Reporting Mechanisms:
The Environmental Management Coordinator shall report to the Clinical Services Director but will collaborate very closely with team leads in all service areas.
