The Management of Energy Development Corporation Limited (EDCL) would like to inform the public that it is recruiting qualified and experienced staff on the following positions:

Background

Energy Development Corporation Limited (EDCL) Rwanda in partnership with the National Fund for Environment and Climate Change (FONERWA) won a four year grant from Global Environment Facility-Least Developed Countries Fund (GEF-LDCF) through African Development Bank (AfDB) to increase the adaptive capacity of vulnerable Rwandan communities to the adverse effects of climate change. The GEF-LDCF grant will added resources to the ongoing Scaling-Up Energy Access Project (SEAP) funded by AfDB under the Electricity Access Roll out Program (EARP).

The project for Increasing Climate Change Adaptive Capacity seeks to increase the adaptive capacity of vulnerable Rwandan communities to the adverse effect of climate change through livelihood diversification and investment in rural infrastructures. The project will maximize the impact of SEAP which provides infrastructure to distribute electricity for households and public institutions, creates and expands opportunities for local populations to pursue electricity-dependent income generating activities.

The project intends to impact the lives of over 800,000 people in Karongi, Nyamasheke and Rusizi districts, and has the following key outcome:
“Diversifying and strengthening climate resilient rural livelihood opportunities for vulnerable communities in Karongi, Nyamasheke and Rusizi Districts.
Under the framework of the above, EDCL is recruiting three (3) district project coordinators to supervise and coordinate project activities in thea above mentioned Districts.

Fish Monitoring Specialist/Lake Kivu Monitoring Programme (LKMP)

Background

The recruited candidate will be part of the monitoring team of Lake Kivu Monitoring Programme, where he/she will work on field and laboratory activities. He/she will be in charge of field samplings and laboratory analyses related to fish monitoring, as well as of maintenance of related equipment. He/she will also be involved in all other monitoring activities, along with his/her colleagues. He/she will benefit of further training, along with other team members or on his/her own. He/she will also be in contact and will have to collaborate with scientists and technician from LKMP’s scientific partner institutions, from Rwanda, DR Congo and others.

Key roles/responsibilities:

  • Every 6 months, perform hydro acoustic surveys on Lake Kivu, with focus near methane gas extraction facilities,
  • Maintain hydro acoustic equipment in good conditions;
  • In cooperation with regional and international partners, regularly carry out:
    the monitoring of fish biodiversity in the littoral and the pelagic zones of the lake;
  • Collect fisheries statistics from fisheries cooperatives,
  • For fish biology: collect Isambaza samples (and other main fish species of the Lake) from fisheries, to measure their length and weight and compare the fish standard length with the acoustic size in relation to seasonal variation
  • Analyse collected data to establish a repartition map of the fish biomasses, as well as the structure of fish size. Data sets will be assessed for seasonal variation;
  • Verify, clean and archive the collected data;
  • Elaborate a report for each measuring campaign and each data collection;
  • In cooperation with colleagues of Lake Kivu Monitoring team:
  • Participate in CTD/water sampling with the Lake Kivu monitoring team;
  • Participate in the analysis and interpretation of the monitoring results;
  • Use and maintain the laboratory equipment in good conditions;
  • In cooperation with RAB (Rwanda Agricultural Board), monitor fish farming in lake Kivu and carry out survey of different methods of aquaculture carried out on the lake and assess their impact on the lake’s ecosystem;
  • On a regular basis, organize and perform communication with fishermen and fish selling women to assess the impact of methane gas extraction on their activities;
  • Any other task entrusted to him by his/her hierarchical superiors and in relation with the mission of REG/EDCL.

Qualifications and experience

  • At least a Master Degree in Aquatic science, Limnology, Aquaculture and fisheries, or in any related field.
  • Knowledge in Hydro acoustic survey will be an advantage;
  • Candidate should have at least 2 years of experience in fish monitoring;

Additional skills/requirements

  • Candidate should be able to treat correctly and rigorously a large mass of data;
  • Candidate should have an excellent knowledge of informatics, in particular he/she should be at ease working with large datasets;
  • Candidate should be dynamic, able to work in a scientific context;
  • Candidate should accept to work on the whole lake;
  • Candidate should have communications skills, to interact with a wide range of stakeholders, extending from local community to international experts;
  • Candidate should have be fluent in English and/or French (Capability to work in the two languages will be privileged);
  • Successful candidate should be flexible and ready to work in provinces and be based in Rubavu district.
