JOB DETAILS:
Context
• WWF Zambia works to protect our natural resources – rivers, wildlife, forests – so we can continue to benefit from food, energy and water. WWF-Zambia is seeking to employ a Gender and Environmental & Social Safeguards Officer under the Climate Adaptation and Protected Area Initiative (CAPA).
• The CAPA project aims to increase the resilience of ecosystems and livelihoods of people of all genders and social groups in the Zambian component of the KAZA TFCA to current and future climate change. Critical to this project is the upscaling of the concept of nature-based climate solutions anchored on the inclusive participation and leadership of women and youth, and other marginalised groups in responding to climate risks and creation of a range of climate proofed livelihood and development options for all genders supported by climate smart institutions.
• The initiative aims to increase the resilience of ecosystems and people of all genders and social groups in selected countries to current and future climate change.

Major Duties and Responsibilities
• The CAPA Gender &ESSF Officer will work to ensure that gender is mainstreamed across the project, including training materials, monitoring, operations, policies and procedures and design activities that target women, girls and youths within the scope of the project. He/ She will oversee all Gender and ESSF-related work for the CAPA in Zambia to ensure compliance and best practices are adhered to as well as.

Technical 50%
• Promote the mainstreaming of gender and social inclusion issues at all stages of the project cycle, from planning of the initiative through their evaluation
• Assist in the facilitation of gender and social inclusion trainings with project staff and project stakeholders
• Participate in capacity needs assessments for project partners and other stakeholders and organize all training logistics with the support of project manager and other WWF Zimbabwe relevant departments.
• Collaborate with the GESI Team from IISD to identify trainings for community structures on gender related topics and mainstream, including but not limited to gender awareness and integration, human rights program management, gender inclusiveness toward more efficient and effective organizational operation.
• Identify and build the capacity of community-based support groups/committees to provide community-based support on gender transformative models.
• Develop guidelines, including a checklist, for partners in mainstreaming gender and social equality to enable effective implementation of the CAPA initiatives.
• Participate in Policy reviews and identify gaps that affect women, youth, and other vulnerable groups from benefiting from natural resources
• Maintain active relationships with gender specialists and others in related organizations and projects in the KAZA region.
• Support the inclusion of gender and social issues within WWF programs
• Serve as CAPA and landscape focal point for ESSF.
• Ensure no-harm principle and WWF Environmental Social Safeguard Framework (ESSF) are implemented in the CAPA in Zambia and Angola.
• Support the conservation teams on risk assessment to all project and program implementation and identify potential risks.
• To share information with and provide mentoring support to project team members, partner staff, and consultants responsible for implementing E&S safeguards.
• To provide technical guidance for the ESSF screening of WWF projects, especially for those high-risk ratings. To help teams identify risk mitigation and management opportunities/strategies.
• Support the CAPA and landscape in the updating of project specific and Landscape Risk Register

Monitoring, Evaluation and Reporting 30%
• Conduct regular data quality assurance to ensure capturing of data on women, youth, and other vulnerable groups as per project requirements.
• Work close with advocacy and communication specialists to develop project materials including case studies, or share with donors and other stakeholders on outcomes of the women empowerment of the project.
• Support M&E team to monitor outcomes/ impact related to women & youth progression towards achieving set objectives
• Support the M&E team to conduct baseline and evaluation processes of the project to measure the status, impact, and scale of gender and social inclusion interventions
• Work close with advocacy and communication specialists to develop project materials including case studies, or share with donors and other stakeholders on outcomes of the women empowerment of the project.
• Support the M&E team to conduct baseline and evaluation processes of the project
• Prepare monthly and quarterly reports on gender and ESSF project activities carried out.
• Prepare and share human interest stories and case studies related to project impact for learning.

Management 20%
• Support planning and budgeting of Women, youth, and other targeted marginalized groups’ activities during annual, quarterly, and monthly planning meetings.

Qualification/Experience/Technical Skills:
• Degree in Development studies, Gender Studies, Social Work, social anthropology, indigenous people’s studies or other relevant fields
• At least 3 years working in the area of gender and social inclusion in environmental sustainability and natural resource management and Sustainable livelihoods projects
• Experience working on Nature-Based Climate Solutions (NBCS) for adaptation projects.
• Some knowledge of local people’s policy, development and implementation; social safeguards; development of guidance, references and tools related to indigenous peoples and social safeguards; design and monitoring of climate change and development programs, projects and activities; and advocacy and capacity development.
• Willing to work in a remote location.
• Strong report writing skills

Competencies
• Clear understanding of Gender, power relations, and issues surrounding women empowerment.
• Demonstrated skills in training management and experience in capacity building relating to Gender and Social Inclusion.
• Ability to develop and facilitate participatory trainings and workshops and provide ongoing technical support to conservation team and relevant third parties.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication and language skills. English essential and other languages desirable
• Works to the highest level of integrity and confidentiality
• Positive, highly motivated, innovative, with strong organizational and inter-personal skills.
• Strong knowledge of computer applications, including MS Word and Excel.
