Geographical Information System Officer (GISO)
Frankfurt Zoological Society conserves wildlife and ecosystems focussing on protected areas and outstanding wild places. FZS maintains long-term conservation programmes in Africa, South America, Asia, and Europe. The Africa Programme is FZS’ largest and oldest and is active in five focal countries: The Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia and Zimbabwe (www.fzs.org).
FZS Zambia (FZS-Z) has been active in the North Luangwa Ecosystem since 1986 and Nsumbu since 2017, working to conserve these globally important wilderness areas. FZS-Z supports effective and efficient protected area management, with a focus on law enforcement and community outreach with a focus on empowering host custodians in GMAs to manage their own resources. Particularly, the North Luangwa Ecosystem Programme (NLCP) has the mission of ‘Linking Livelihoods and Landscapes’. NLCP works using the following strategies:
Protect=Conserve=Preserve- This aims to implement robust and adaptive large landscape enforcement tactics and capability to protect, conserve, and preserve wildlife habitats and ecological services;
Empower=Educate=Enterprise- This aims to implement creative and beneficial initiatives to empower, educate and deliver enterprise opportunities for neighbouring communities and wider Zambian society;
Communicate=Connect=Change- This aims to implement focused messaging to communicate and connect with stakeholders and partners for effective and positive change; and
Structure=Systems=Support- This aims to implement a clear and enduring organization and financial structure with efficient systems to support a mentally and physically healthy team.

Location/Station
Lundazi with work in Chikwa (Chama) and Chifunda (Chama) Chiefdoms, in the North Luangwa Ecosystem but may be required to work at other locations as the job requires

Job Purpose
This position will provide GIS and Database Management services to the Integrated Land and Resource Governance (ILRG) Program being implemented by FZS through the NLC Programme in partnership with Tetra Tech.
Duties
The Geographic Information System Officer shall work with the Project Coordinator for the smooth implementation of the ILRG Program in the North Luangwa Ecosystem. The duties shall be as follows:
• · Undertake desk-based data capture (digitising) to convert paper maps to GIS datasets.
• · Continually identify, acquire and enrich the database with external spatial data relevant to the project.
• · With the Project coordinator provide training, technical assistance and mentorship to Field Land Surveyors
• · Undertake ground-truthing as needed, in conjunction with field staff, in order to verify the maps and spatial analyses produced and to determine levels of accuracy
• · Contribute to reports and schedules
• · Data quality check and follow up
• · Develop maps as required by the project
• · Production of customary land certificates
• · Assist with setting up and management of data management systems
General
• Adhere to annual FZS and donor budgets, following FZS and donor financial management policy and procedures for proper and transparent use of project funds;
• Ensure responsible use and care of any project assets and equipment assigned to the community outreach team, including vehicles for field teams.
• To attend such meetings, seminars and conferences as may be directed to do;
• Work closely with the office of the DNPW extension staff, CRBs, VAG committees, NLE and other DNPW/FD/DOF field staff within the operational area;
• Perform any other duties that may be delegated in line with NLCP’s strategy.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
• Diploma or degree in the following fields: Natural Resource Management related courses, Computer Sciences, Geographical Information Systems, Geography, Demographic, Surveying, Urban or Rural Planning, or applicants with extensive relevant work-based experience may also be accepted.
• At least 3 years previous experience with GIS and Data Management
• Knowledge of SQL
• GIS package use and map production
• Experience of setting up ODK and managing associated data systems
• A team player and builder
• Excellent written and spoken English, including report writing

• GIS (QGIS) package use
• Knowledge of SQL
