Setting and ReportingThe Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) was established by the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) of the United Nations (UN) in 1958 as one of the United Nations five regional commissions. Its mandate is to promote the economic and social development of its member States, foster intra-regional integration, and promote international cooperation for Africa’s development. Made up of 54 member States, and playing a dual role as a regional arm of the UN and as a key component of the African institutional landscape, ECA is well positioned to make unique contributions to address the Continent’s development challenges. The strategic objective of ECA is framed around delivering ideas and actions for an empowered, inclusive and transformed Africa in the framework of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and Agenda 2063 of the African Union through its three core functions, namely, its function as a think tank, its convening function and its operational function.
The internship positions are located in the Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa (SRO-SA) of the Economic Commission for Africa (ECA), Lusaka, Zambia. The internship is designed to provide mentorship, and exposure to young scholars and practitioners to work in a multicultural international environment of the UN.
The interns will work under the overall supervision and guidance of the Director of SRO-SA and the direct supervision of the Chiefs of the Inclusive Industrialization Section, and Sub-Regional Initiatives Section or any unit they may be deployed to. The internship is for 3 months with an opportunity for extension, depending on the needs of the office.
The internship is unpaid and full-time. Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the Section to which they are assigned. .
Job Responsibilities:
• Research and analyze topics relating to sustainable economic development, governance, planning and poverty reduction in Africa;
• Draft and edit publications, papers and other documents;
• Liaise with SRO-SA stakeholders on key development topics for Africa;
• Support the organization during meetings and events;
• Assist with outreach and communication activities of the Office;
• Participate in day-to-day operational tasks of SRO-SA. This may include servicing requests for information; support for developing presentations; liaison with partner organizations, etc.;
• Prepare a research paper on a topical issue to be identified in consultation with their assigned supervisor;
• Write and submit a close-out report by the end of their internship, as feedback to ECA; and
• Perform administrative and other tasks as assigned.

Job Qualifications:
i) be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher) whose requirements include internship; or
(ii) be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree programme (minimum
Bachelor’s level or equivalent); or
(iii) have graduated with a university degree preferably in the social sciences including economics, development studies, policy studies, political science, communication science/studies, or related fields and, if selected, must commence the internship within a two-year period of graduation.
• Be computer literate in standard software applications;
• Have a demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter; and
• Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which includes willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.
