Background Information
As the leading intergovernmental organization in the field of migration, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) is increasingly called upon by Member States to assist in addressing complex migration and border management challenges in order to maintain the delicate balance between the facilitation of cross-border movements, while upholding border security and protecting migrants’ rights.
IOM’s Immigration and Border Management (IBM) Division supports Member States in improving the policy, legislation, operational systems, human resources and administrative and technical structures required to respond more effectively to diverse migration and border management challenges. IBM activities are in line with IOM’s commitment to facilitate orderly, safe and regular migration and mobility.
Supervision
Under the overall supervision of the IBM Senior Specialist, Border & Identity Solutions and direct supervision of the IBM Border and Identity Solutions Officer, the successful candidate will support the development of the global IBM Programme from IOM Headquarters (HQs). .
Core Functions / Responsibilities:
1. Provide direct support and guidance to IOM field offices, particularly stationed in Africa, and those developing related projects, and liaise with relevant HQ Divisions and Departments as required.
2. Support the drafting of the IBM African Strategy incorporating the Free Movement Protocol, African Free Trade Agreement and the Single Air Transport Market.
3. Assist with the global coordination of IOM’s MIDAS (Migration Information and Data Analysis System) project, draft communication and assist in strengthening the public information package.
4. With a focus in the African continent, assist in other policy development and strategy formulation in the areas covered by the IBM Division, including research and analysis of relevant information on identified issues.
5. Support the compilation of Divisional and Departmental Institutional documents, including reports, general policy and guidance notes for IOM staff as well as communication and outreach material.
6. Represent the Division at meetings and report back on events as required.
7. Perform such other duties as may be assigned.
Training Components and Learning Elements
It is expected that the selected intern will:
• Be exposed to the activities of IOM in the duty station.
• Gain understanding about the IOM and the UN System and its processes.
• Learn technical skills described in this Post Description.
• Be able to prove their dedication, skills and capacity to work in an international setting as part of a diverse and international team.
Skills
• Knowledge of African Union Institutions and Governance will be an important asset. Languages
IOM’s official languages are English, French, and Spanish.
For this position, fluency in English is required (oral and written). Working knowledge of French and/or Spanish is an advantage.
Proficiency of language(s) required will be specifically evaluated during the selection process, which may include written and/or oral assessments.
Required Qualifications and Experience:
Education
• Master’s degree in Political or Social Sciences, Migration Studies, Law and/or International Relations or a related field from an accredited academic institution.
Experience
• Experience in the field of project development and implementation desirable;
• Experience in the thematic areas relevant to IOM’s work in immigration and border management desirable;
• Experience delivering detailed briefs and preparing presentations for senior management;
• Experience drafting internal and external documents.
