Context
UNDP Zambia is strategically repositioning its country programme implementation based on emerging opportunities and UNDP’s comparative advantages that maximizes partnerships, resource mobilization and impact in keeping with UNDP’s mandate as it embarks on the development of its next programme cycle to contribute to the UN support to the Government of Zambia through the formulation of the first ever UN Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework (UNSDCF) as part of the UN Development System (UNDS) Reform and the 8th National Development Plan (8NDP). As the New Dawn Government together with its Cooperating Partners including UNDP Zambia seek to advance further into the Decade of Action with only 7 years left to achieve the SDGs, the world and individual countries are still grappling with COVID-19 response and socio-economic recovery. In the context of this changing environment, it is more pressing that UNDP Zambia revisits its approach to programming and delivery to ensure constant relevance and effectiveness in supporting the Government of the Republic of Zambia (GRZ) to address key issues and most important priorities, while concurrently exploring innovative and creative ways to accelerate the achievement of the objectives set out in both Agenda 2030 and the upcoming 8NDP using a strategic approach to planning resulting in an efficient and effective delivery of the Country Programme to promote sustainable human development. Against this backdrop and building upon the lessons learnt over the past years, UNDP Zambia is strengthening its Governance and Gender Unit to rollout the vision of repositioning its CO programme to ensure that UNDP delivers on its mandate effectively in Zambia. The Governance and Gender Unit is one of three pillars of the Programme Cluster along with the Inclusive and Sustainable Growth and the Environment and Energy Units. Each Unit is headed by a Programme Specialist (Head of Unit) and supported by a Programme Analyst and a Programme Associate in addition to the dedicated personnel of projects under each pillar. The UNDP Governance Portfolio includes support to elections, decentralization and local governance, human rights, transparency and accountability, and promotion of gender equity and equality. The National community volunteer part time will be part of the Governance team and will be expected to provide support the CO’s Governance and Gender Unit to ensure adequate knowledge management in line with various UNDP frameworks on digital and the POPP. Living conditions and remarks
Zambia is a land-linked, resource-rich country with sparsely populated land in the Centre of Southern Africa. It shares its border with eight countries (Angola, Botswana, Democratic Republic of Congo, Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, Tanzania, and Zimbabwe) that serve as an expanded market for its goods. Lusaka is the capital of the Republic of Zambia. The climate is sunny and temperate, but it can be very cold during few months, with freezing temperature at times especially during the night. It is therefore advisable to bring warm clothing and foresee using heaters and other heating options when necessary. As the commercial and cultural Centre of Zambia, Lusaka has seen rapid development in recent decades, with reasonable transportation connections and widely spoken English making the city highly attractive to vacationers and experts alike. Unemployment and poverty are issues in the city, and beyond. Key industries for the region and Zambia as a whole, include mining, agriculture, and tourism. Like most Southern African cities, life in Lusaka will require some adjustments for a person moving from outside the region, but the potential rewards and opportunities for experiences are well worth the effort. Lusaka hosts several international organization and embassies/diplomatic missions, therefore there is a very large community of expatriates from around the world. Housing is most of the time readily available and of good standard options are available. Most foodstuffs, beverages, household goods, furniture, and clothing, mostly imported from South Africa, Europe, and China while some ranges of local brands are available at a competitive price to imports. Meat, fish, fresh fruits, and vegetables are reasonably priced and abundantly available. The basic infrastructures – roads, utilities, and telecommunications are of reasonable standard, although the city experiences power outages from time to time. Medical facilities are still largely inadequate, although several private clinics and hospitals provide reasonably good routine care. Several restaurants around the city serve local or international cuisine and there are numerous social and sports facilities (fitness, tennis, swimming, riding, golf, etc.) in the major hotels or in different establishments around the city. There are no major or special security concerns within Lusaka city limits. For more information, please visit http://zambiatourism.com.
