GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Library Associate performs a variety of clerical and para-professional tasks that maintain the orderly flow of daily business at the library circulation desk. This employee provides service to students, Instructors and the administration; processes library materials; and maintains the work of the circulation desk. Work is evaluated through supervisory conferences, observation of work procedures and performance, and annual performance
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain the Work of the Circulation Desk
• Physically maintain the circulation desk, supplies, equipment, and records.
• Check library materials in and out to customers.
• Enroll new library customers.
• Process Instructors’ requests.
• Maintain the New Books Display Area.
• Process Library Materials
• Process new newspapers and magazines.
• Shelve library materials.
• Process all new library materials for physical placement in the library collection.
WORK EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
At least 3 years prior experience working in a library.
EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
Degree in Library Studies from a recognized institution.

• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Ability to become familiar with and instruct others in the use of library facilities, materials and services.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Library Science
• Ability to learn appropriate professional library techniques, procedures, and practices.
• Ability to learn library classification system and arrangements.
• Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions and to accept responsibility and supervision.
Technical
• Knowledge and ability to work with computers.
• Ability to perform detail tasks and keep statistical records.
• Knowledge of the Library’s University Council’s policies as they pertain to the operation of the library and its collection.
• Ability to work some evenings and Saturdays.
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office – Word, Outlook and Excel
• Must be able to effectively communicate (speak, read and write) in English.
