Job Summary
1. Under the supervision of the Head Teacher, the Literacy Interventionist will teach reading and writing skills to students struggling with literacy. You will help students learn the basics of reading such as learning letters and sounds and progress to higher reading skills. The aim of the program is to ensure that students develop reading and writing skills that will contribute to their overall academic growth. You will collaborate with Literacy Coaches to ensure the program is successfully implemented and achieves the desired outcomes.

Responsibilities
Literacy
1. Help students to improve specific reading skills such as letter-naming, initial sounds, decoding unfamiliar words, vocabulary development, sight word recognition and comprehension skills.
2. Promote interest in reading by utilizing the library facilities available in the school.
3. Prepare weekly lesson plans detailing the skills to be learnt, methods and materials to use.
4. Teach students basic writing skills of sentence construction, punctuation and paragraph building.

Student Achievement Reporting
1. Keep the Head Teacher, Class Teacher and Literacy Coaches informed on the progress students are making and any challenges encountered.
2. Provide feedback to student on their reading and writing progress.
3. Submit end of term report to the Head Teacher.

Record Management
1. Keep a record of student attendance and follow up on absenteeism.
2. Keep a record of reading/writing strengths and weaknesses of individual pupils to inform lesson design and strategies to address the identified weak areas.
3. Work with the Head Teacher to coordinate the smooth implementation of the intervention program.
4. Consult with classroom teachers about students’ needs and design methods of learning, assessments and curriculum most appropriate for each student.

Assess, Monitor and Evaluate
1. Conduct student assessment on a monthly basis.
2. Conduct ongoing evaluation of the intervention program and make recommendations for change where necessary.

Communication
1. Communicate necessary information to colleagues regarding pupil progress and behavior
2. Policies and procedures: Ensure continual implementation of the Child Protection Policy to safeguard the children.
3. The Literacy Interventionist will perform other responsibilities as may, from time to time, be assigned by the Supervisor.

Knowledge, Skills, and Behaviors required to achieve the role’s objectives
1. Grade 12 Certificate with a minimum of 5 credits or better
2. Minimum of Primary School Diploma.
3. Registered with Teaching Council of Zambia.
4. At least 3 years of teaching experience at primary school.
5. Knowledge of phonics is essential.
Excellent command of oral and written English.
