Lumwana Mine, Kalumbila, Zambia.
Reporting to: Mine Exploration Geologist
Overview
Lumwana Mining Company Limited (LMC), a copper mining company owned by Barrick Gold Corporation is situated in the North Western region of Zambia, some 300 km west of the Zambian Copperbelt and 95 km south west of the provincial capital of Solwezi. The mine is a multi-pit, multi staged operation mining approximately 100MT of ore and waste per annum and producing copper concentrates containing an average of 120,000 tonnes of copper metal per year over a twenty (20) year mine life, making Lumwana the largest single open cut copper mine in Africa. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Mine Exploration Technician.
Role Summary
Reporting to the Mine Exploration Geologist, you will be responsible for collecting, handling, and processing diamond drilling samples from the drill sites to the core shed. Your duties will include but are not limited to the following:
Responsibilities
• Carefully collect and transport drill core for processing.
• Accurately process drill core including orientations and depth markers in preparation for geological logging and sampling.
• Accurately and safely sample drill core using a diamond core saw.
• Regularly clean and maintain sampling equipment of contaminants.
• Correctly label the sample bags in readiness or dispatch.
• Comply with QA/QC sampling procedures i.e., duplicates, standard and blanks.
• Maintain sample lay down area in a neat and organised manner. Discard unwanted samples as requested.
• Complete all associated paperwork correctly and legibly.
• Proper and safe operation of portable analysers (XRF, spectrometer or scintillometer). Perform data downloads.
• Collect rocks for QA/QC purposes.
• Conduct regular stock take of consumables to ensure ready supply for continuous operation. Notify supervisor of low stock levels
• Assist with vegetation, track clearing and rehabilitation activities.
• Identify and troubleshoot any data collection, calibration, operation/maintenance issues. Inform your supervisor before progressing with any maintenance/ repair issue.
• Assist geologists with field related tasks, such as mapping, logging, and sampling.
• Ensure all contractors and Barrick employees comply with LMC Safety Policy and Procedures.
• Complete all workplace inspections as required.
• Keeping Geology work areas clean and tidy.
Experience & Qualifications
• Full Grade Twelve Certificate.
• Exploration drilling experience preferred. Mining experience advantageous.
• Good planning and organizational skills.
• High level of responsibility and shows accountability for own actions.
• Good written and oral communication skills in English.
• Able to grasp basic scientific concepts.
• Willingness to learn new tasks & work hard.
• Be able to work alone or part of a multi-disciplinary team.
• Ability to meet deadlines and work in an efficient manner
• Follow instructions clearly and ask for clarification if not clear.
• Must have a valid driver’s license.
