The PEPFAR-funded Historically Black Colleges and Universities Global Health Consortium (HBCU-GHC) project is designed to transform clinical HIV practice to provide high quality, comprehensive, inter-professional care, and treatment to people living with HIV with the ultimate goal of improving the quality of healthcare, clinic workflow, and team building leading to improved health outcomes.
Meharry Medical College Global Health and HIV Clinical Services is a consortium of the HBCU project and is currently implementing projects aimed at improving the quality of care for mothers and babies in selected Ministry of Health healthcare facilities in the country. Meharry is working on expanding its work and as a result of this expansion, the project is recruiting for the following full-time position.
Nutritionist – One (1) Position
Meharry Medical College Global Health and HIV Clinical Services (MMCGHHCS) Zambia seeks a Nutritionist to join the clinical team in order to support timely, appropriate and well-coordinated nutrition interventions in HIV exposed and infected infants in the MCH departments of the facilities we are operating in. This is to improve the quality of care for these infants and to reduce morbidity and mortality from malnutrition.
Reporting to the Senior Supervising Clinical Paediatrician; this position will be responsible for, but not limited to the following duties:
• Provide technical support to MMCGHHCS and develop a strategy for the Integrated Management for Acute Malnutrition (IMAM) and Community based Management for Acute Malnutrition (CMAM) in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
• Work with doctors, nurses and community health volunteers to strengthen the processes to identify and treat malnutrition in the project sites.
• Coordinate with MMCGHHCS, to plan and support the scale-up of nutrition interventions in MCH.
• Provide support to strengthen the capacity of MMCGHHCS staff and key partners involved in the nutrition response to ensure quality program implementation, including facilitating the development or adaptation of training and guidance materials as needed.
• Support to and advocate for nutrition assessments in collaboration with government partners, NGOs and other nutrition actors and in coordination with MMCGHHCS.
• Support nutrition program design, implementation and M&E (including operational planning, procurement of supplies, development of a communication strategy, etc).
• Support the Clinical team to ensure that nutrition activities on the MMCGHHCS are adequately planned, implemented, and monitored to achieve the program set targets.
• Participate in building human nutrition capacity and building institutional capacity to succeed in, Maternal, Neonatal, Child Health, and Nutrition.
• Facilitate guideline review, updating, or development in needy program areas.
• Facilitate development and procurement of IEC materials and Equipment for Nutrition management.
• Develop monthly work plans; write appropriate monthly, quarterly, and annual reports.
• Document trends related to malnutrition in babies and report cases of malnutrition to the peadiatrician.
• Collaborate with providers to identify and connect with patients in need of nutrition counselling.
• Establish treatment plans and communicate with patients.
• Meet directly with patients to identify education needs, provide individual instructions.
• Identify ways to improve care of patients and make recommendations.
• Perform any other duties as assigned by Meharry Management.
Skills and Qualifications
• Education: A Bachelor’s degree in one of the following fields is required: nutrition, public health nutrition, nutritional epidemiology, global/international health and nutrition, nutrition research, or another nutrition -related science field.
• Experience: Minimum of 2 years’ professional work experience in Zambia in one or more of the following areas is required: nutrition, public health nutrition, nutrition planning and management, or maternal, infant and child health/nutrition care nutrition. Must have operational experience supporting/managing nutrition interventions.
• Membership affiliation to an applicable professional body.
• Field experience with NGOs is an asset.
• Knowledge & Skills: familiarity with IMAM/CMAM/SAM and prevention programming. Conceptual and operational knowledge of nutrition in moms and babies.
• Strong assessment and analytical skills.
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in multicultural settings and teams.
• Ability to perform duties under pressure with a minimum level of supervision.
