Mission and Objectives
The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) is the UN's global development network, advocating for change and connecting countries to knowledge, experience and resources to help people build a better life. Our work is concentrated on three main focus areas:
• Sustainable development;
• Democratic governance and peacebuilding;
• Climate and disaster resilience. UNDP helps countries attract and use aid effectively. In all our activities, we promote gender equality and the protection of human rights. UNDP has enhanced its support to countries to work towards the eradication of extreme poverty, enabling us to build back better and work towards innovative solutions to the complex global challenges. We have refined our service offering through six signature solutions to provide a more integrated response to the development challenges that we are all facing in this complex global environment. This includes a mix of policy advice, technical assistance, catalytic financing and innovative programmes tailored to country specific needs to accelerate progress towards the Sustainable Development Goals through six our signature solutions on - poverty, governance, resilience, environment, energy, gender equality.

Context
Following Zambia's graduation into lower-middle-income country (LMIC) status and the medium human development category, the United Nations system in Zambia and the Zambian Government have agreed to shift from development assistance to partnership. Reflecting the sustainable development agenda and Zambia's own 'Vision 2030', they have set out their collective aspirations for transformation in an innovative Zambia-United Nations Sustainable Development Partnership Framework 2016-2021.
The three pillars of the 2016-2021 Zambia-United Nations Sustainable Development Partnership Framework (inclusive social development, environmentally sustainable economic development, and governance and participation) seek to address pervasive inequalities and ensure inclusiveness of interventions through eight outcomes. Within the pillars on inclusive social development and environmentally sustainable economic development, a human rights-based approach led to the development of mutually reinforcing outcome pairs that place equal emphasis on improving the capacity and performance of duty bearers and stimulating rights holders.
To respond to the needs of young people, and to guarantee that their basic human rights are recognized and enforced, young people’s active and meaningful participation in their societies and in democratic practices and processes is of crucial importance. The UNDP Governance Portfolio include support to election, decentralized governance, human rights, transparency and accountability, support to the national assembly and promotion of gender equity and equality. The UN Youth Volunteer will be part of the team and will be expected to provide support in identifying entry points to promoting active and responsible youth participation in democratic processes, focusing on peace building and justice. Other Information
Living conditions and remarks
Zambia is a landlocked, middle-income country with a population estimated at 18 million. Lusaka became the capital city of Zambia in May 1935. Lusaka’s central position in Zambia and its pleasant climate were two of the main reasons for its selection as the capital. It is a metropolis, which provides a home to about two and nine million (2.9m) inhabitants of different nationalities. It has grown to become the seat of the Government of the Republic of Zambia and as such all diplomatic missions, international organizations, industrial and commercial entities are based there. Its political, social, economic, and cultural significance has also increased through the years. Public transport is provided by private operators using minibuses and taxis. The bus routes are not mapped, and roads are less congested. Good modern housing for rent is available on the open market. The official language is English, which is widely spoken. The country is generally food secure, with sufficient local fresh fruits and vegetables available in the markets, as well as various dairy, poultry, and meat products. There are several international schools using the Cambridge GCSE or IGCSE syllabi, from key stage one through to A levels. Health conditions are generally good, although malaria is prevalent. Zambia is generally a safe place to live in, although not free of crime. Some prudence is required. For more info, visit: http://www.zambiatourism.com.
