Job Title: Programme Officer
Reporting to: Rwanda Country Manager
Posting period: 11-month renewable
About Teach A Man To Fish
Teach A Man To Fish supports schools to establish school-based enterprises which serve as both practical learning platforms for students and as income-generating activities for the school. Our philosophy is: give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach a man to fish and he’ll eat for a lifetime.
We work with schools across the world to set up school businesses. These businesses are both educational and profitable - teaching students practical business and workplace skills, and generating extra income for schools. Young people learn by d0ing- gaining practical business experience and develop soft skills like problem-solving, teamwork and the self-confidence to pursue their goals, get a job, or create their own job.
Teach A Man To Fish rolls out the School Enterprise Challenge Awards Programme – a global business start-up Awards Programme. It aims to create a globally aware, socially responsible, young entrepreneurs.
Background
In 2017, 59 schools taking part in the School Enterprise Challenge (SEC) across Rwanda developed business plans, of which 43 implemented the school business. In 2018, 135 schools developed business plans and 78 schools across the country have implemented the businesses. In 2019, Teach A Man To Fish is looking to bring the programme to more schools across the country, focusing in Kigali, Huye and Nyaruguru Districts
Teach A Man To Fish is looking to recruit 1 x Programme Officer that will be based in Kigali office and will work closely with our staff in Kigali, East Africa and in the UK.
Main Functions of post
• To be a confident practitioner of the Teach A Man To Fish school business model
• To deliver the school business model in Rwanda in line with a strategy to increase the number of children and teachers benefiting from skills development each year and the number of schools benefiting from additional income
• To contribute to the organization MEL to increase understanding of our impact to help track our efficiency and to reporting
Within Teach A Man To Fish’s Vision, Mission, Strategies and Policies, the responsibilities of the post are:
• Manage communications to schools, including marketing, and SEC schools follow up communications on activities and deadlines
• Input to the work plan for SEC programme in Rwanda and ensure all SEC activities delivered on deadline
• Develop quarterly and annual reports to partners and represent Teach A Man To Fish at partner events where appropriate
• Deliver M&E activities with SEC schools in Rwanda in line with work plan and targets
• Develop SEC case studies and submit to the Country Manager for review and approval
• Input into the quarterly reports on SEC activities
• Regularly update registration, submission, communication, M&E and partnership trackers and submit to the Country Manager
• Deliver SEC workshops to SEC schools
Generic
• Work closely with Programmes team and support as required
• Provide weekly/monthly reports to the line manager in a timely manner
• Carry out other activities as directed by Teach A Man To Fish
Person specification
Essential
• Fluent spoken and written English and Kinyarwanda
• Experience delivering training and capacity building
• Experience working with schools
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a team
• A proven ability to work independently with minimal supervision
• Strong IT skills and familiarity with Word & Excel
• Minimum of 1-year experience in an international development programme
• Flexible and ability to work with a diverse team
Desirable
• Fluent spoken and written Kinyarwanda (highly desirable)
• Fluent spoken and written French
• Prior knowledge of the Teach A Man To Fish School Business Model
