Senior Epidemiologist Ref No. SE/IS/16/12/22
Reports to Director implementation Science. The incumbent will support the research and program epidemiology needs of CIDRZ, with a special focus on the trans-disciplinary Implementation Science unit where the incumbent will be based. He/ she will plan, initiate, and conduct epidemiological investigations, implementation science studies, and disease surveillance including COVID surveillance, and serve as a technical expert to all teams at CIDRZ, to support appropriate research and program design based on epidemiological evidence. He/ she will support dedicated capacity building and epidemiologic methods training.
Main duties
• Plans, designs, and conducts original epidemiological research.
• Provides epidemiological analytical support to research studies in the implementation science unit, and other departments as necessary.
• Analyses and interprets findings.
• Supports development and writing of project proposals for new funding.
• Provides consultation to independent and department investigators on epidemiologic research methodology, design, and results.
• Conducts analyses and writes scientific manuscripts for publication in high impact peer-reviewed journals.
• Supports preparation of reports and technical documentation specific to epidemiologic elements of ongoing projects and programs.
• Evaluates impact current programs are having on relevant health indicators, with a focus on PEPFAR MER indicators.
• Serves as an epidemiological technical expert on surveillance of communicable and non-communicable disease(s)/condition(s).
• Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with leading health managers, policy makers, and scientists in Zambia, as well as health professionals such as physicians, nurses, laboratory staff, and representatives of other agencies to facilitate intimate understanding of infectious disease surveillance activities nationally.
• Makes technical and informational presentations to professionals, Zambia’s MOH, scientific and public health institutions, and the public.
• Supports development and writing of research and program proposals for new funding, with a focus on the needs of the implementation science, SI, and analysis units
• Works to develop and sustain an independent research funding portfolio to remain self-funded and to ensure continued excellence as a principal investigator at CIDRZ
• Actively seeks sources of funding to support and expand institutional epidemiology and advanced epidemiological methods capacity.
• Provide/Develop training for students and staff in principles of field epidemiology, basic and advanced epidemiological methods, causal inference and handling of missing data, large-scale data science, implementation science research methodology, and infectious disease modelling and surveillance.
Qualifications
• Doctorate in epidemiology or public health with a specialization in epidemiology required
• Knowledge of advanced epidemiological methods, including handling of missing data, causal inference/ directed acyclic graphs, sampling approaches, longitudinal data analyses, and application of Bayesian approaches.
• Expert in field epidemiology, including methods and techniques for infectious disease surveillance, control and prevention, with a particular focus on COVID-19 and other emerging pathogens with pandemic potential
• Knowledge and experience in the theory, practice, and application of epidemiologic research methodologies including the implementation of common epidemiologic study designs, such as case control, cohort, and cross-sectional designs
• Proficiency in applied implementation science analytical methods, including before-after, interrupted time series, regression discontinuity, and instrumental variable analyses
• Ability to write high-quality scientific manuscripts and technical reports, and mentor junior investigators in their writing.
• Willing and able to contribute to winning business development initiatives, including the writing of research and program grant proposals
• Proficiency in computer applications used to generate, organize, and display statistical charts, graphs, geographical, and other research data, including R, Stata, Python, and/or SAS.
• Engaged in cutting edge developments in epidemiological research as a journal editor or epidemiology instructor/ faculty member
• Ability to independently plan, implement, and coordinate research studies.
• Ability to conduct and direct epidemiologic investigations.
• Ability to describe the distribution and magnitude of health and disease problems in human populations and identify risk factors for disease.
• Ability to communicate highly complex information to people with varying levels of technical knowledge; collect and analyse complex statistical data; and draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations to a lay audience.
• Ability to make public presentations to community organizations, boards, commissions, conferences, and legislative bodies.
• Experience working with big data (>10 million observations) and extensive practice cleaning routine electronic medical record and DHIS data.
• Previous supervisory experience required.
• Possesses excellent statistical and analytical skills
• Experience with surveillance data and systems (COVID-19 surveillance preferred)
• Expert in STATA, SAS, Python, and/or R statistical software
• Experience using spatial epidemiology and fluency with mapping software required
• Proven record of publication (first/last author preferred) in high impact, peer-reviewed journals concerning HIV/non-communicable disease co-morbidity research
• Proven record of publication (first/last author preferred) in high impact, peer-reviewed journals concerning COVID-19 research
• Proficient in modelling complex data to answer important research and infectious disease surveillance questions is required
