THE OPPORTUNITY
The Senior Program Mentor (SPM) will have the primary responsibility of supporting the Regional Program Coordinator with the implementation of the School Health Program activities across the district. The SPM’s major responsibilities include but are not limited to planning, coordination and implementation of the school health activities at district level.
The position holder will work with the Program team to provide mentorship support to Zonal Heads and School Health Administrators. The focus of the role will be to ensure that the school health program is functional and incorporated in the day-to-day work schedules of the implementing school. S/he will support the school level management and develop capacity to supervise, motivate and monitor trained health teachers as well as rally support of the entire school community. The position holder will provide mentorship support to Zonal Heads and SHAs on the SHN policy framework with a view of building capacity for oversight and leadership of the School Health Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The SPM will be responsible for mentorship of Zonal Heads and School Health Administrators to ensure effective planning and implementation of school health services following the MOE School Health and Nutrition Guidelines. The SPM will provide technical support develop capacity at the school level strengthen management, supervision and monitoring of SHP and support SHAs to develop an integrated termly calendar of events/work plans and budgets. The SPM will be responsible for scheduling Community Stakeholders engagement to facilitate the attainment of a health promoting environment through mobilization of community champions and dispelling myths and misconceptions.
Mentorship of school health services:
• Maintain effective partnerships with school management and promote visibility of the School Health Program
• Support Zonal heads to prepare termly plans for school health services activities at the sub district and zonal level to ensure integration of SHP at the implementation level.
• Provide one on one mentorship sessions with School Health Administrators (Head and Deputy teachers) to develop capacity to manage and supervise school health teachers
• Support Expansion Coordinators to conduct intro school orientation in expansion sites
• Conduct team building exercises for SHAs to improve team cohesion and enhance collaboration
• Develop termly work plans with the school management to implement the school health services
• Develop a quality improvement monitoring schedule with Zonal Head and Education Standards Officers
• Maintain a database of all SHAs (heads and deputy) for tracking and ease communication.
• Compile monthly progress reports for school level implementation.
• Facilitate annual review and planning for annual joint planning and review meetings for school health activities with community stakeholders.
• Build capacity of SHAs in conflict management and resolution
• Work with HL mentors to schedule performance management data review meetings
• Develop a schedule and participate in termly Community Stakeholders meetings.
• Conduct monthly mentorship meetings for SHAs (head and deputy)
• Implement school health activities as assigned by the Regional Program Coordinator,
• Orient newly deployed School Health Administrators on the school health program implementation
Monitoring and Evaluation of the Program Implementation:
• Work with School Administrators to monitor construction phase and management of health room
• Conduct visits to the school health room ensure smooth running of the school health activities.
• Work with the Zonal heads and Health Facility In-Charge to create linkage/synergy between the clinic staff and schools for the school health activities.
• Monitor implementation of the school health Program and identify technical support needs at the school level
QUALIFICATIONS
• Degree/higher Diploma in teaching
• Must have experience working in government settings and knowledge of school health services
• Excellent communication and mentorship skills
• Should be computer literate
• Must possess excellent facilitation and interpersonal skills
• Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
• Passion for improving health seeking behaviors among school aged children
• At least 2 years’ experience supporting school health Program is a strong plus
• Certified School Health Administrator will be an added advantage
