Our client, one of the leading Hotels in Zambia, Holiday Inn is recruiting for the position of Commis Chef. Great restaurant memories come from many places. The sights, sounds, scents and importantly, the food. As cook/commis chef, your passion for presentation and dedication to delivering flavour will complete each guests experience. By taking pride in your workspace, keeping your standards high, and giving our menu the benefit of your expertise, you will create some of our guests most lasting memories. As a commis chef you’re on the first rung of the ladder to becoming a great chef. You will do food preparation work and basic cooking under the supervision of a chef de partie or section chef, being exposed to sections such as sauce, vegetables, fish and butchery. This is your big chance to learn all there is to know about your trade, but the standard and style of cooking you do will be determined by your commitment and training to the culinary art. .
Duties and Responsibilities
• Make each meal a feast for the eyes and treat for the taste buds. With your own signature flare, you will turn our high standards into memorable meals for every guest.
• Own your work area – ensure our supplies and equipment are always correct and well maintained and minimize waste
• Preparing and cooking ingredients necessary and assisting in all sections of the kitchen as directed by the Head Chef
• Maintaining high levels of service
• Assisting and monitoring stock, including stock rotation
• Ensuring minimum kitchen wastage
• Keeping all working areas clean and tidy and ensure no cross contamination
• Learning skills and recipes from other members of the department and applying them
• Complying with all company policies and procedures and all statutory regulations and food hygiene policies.
• Ensure that food storage areas are maintained in accordance with the company’s Food Hygiene, Healthy and Safety and Environmental policies and procedures
• Any other reasonable duties required by the Head Chef or General Manager

Qualifications, Experience and Core Competencies Required
• Degree or higher in any related field with over 5 years of experience in a similar role and must have traceable references
• Communication skills – guests/colleagues will need to come to you with concerns as well as compliments, so you’ll be easy to talk to
• Fluency in English and a local language – extra language skills would be great, but not essential
• Literate and tech-savvy – you’ll need a good grasp of reading, writing, basic math’s and computer literate.
• Flexibility – night, weekend and holiday shifts are all part of the job.
• You should have a grade 12 certificate or equivalent qualification.
• Experience – ideally, you’ll have spent at least one year in a reputable Hotel/Restaurant Kitchen
• Strength – sometimes you’ll need to lift, push and pull big objects up to 50lbs (23 kg). This can involve bending and kneeling
• Attention to detail, to maintain the standards and maintain a highly organized and clutter free Restaurant, Bar and service areas.
