JOB DETAILS:

Background Information
The mining industry is an important source of employment in Southern Africa and attracts labour from within the country and across borders. The industry involves both large scale mining and artisanal and/or small scale mining done by locals. Miners are prone to lung diseases including TB due to prolonged exposure to silica dust; crowded living and working conditions with inadequate ventilation; high incidence of silicosis; and HIV/TB co-infection among others. Research shows that 89% of mineworkers have latent TB. One of the challenges in TB control is to provide real access to diagnostic services (increased case finding) and make sure patients are treated correctly and able to complete the whole treatment period.
Despite the country’s longstanding history of mining, inadequate mediations have been implemented in the mines to limit the spread of communicable diseases such as TB and HIV and provide continuity of care and compensation support for mineworkers, ex-mineworkers and their families. Instead, the industry has for many years conveyed occupational related illnesses such as TB, silicosis and public health burden such as HIV to the public sector. Even though the government and Civil Society Organisations have responded to this burden to a certain extent, a lot more needs to be done. .
