Background:
• SNV is preparing for an exciting new project focusing on changing the business models in cotton, dairy and horticulture production systems. The project, which is to start in January 2020 is a three year project. Working with companies, SMEs and farmers, the new project brings together lessons from previous achievements in climate smart agriculture and renewable energy and works on proving the premise that an integrated private sector approach to climate change can be commercially viable and environmentally sustainable:

• Integrated Soil Fertility Management + Agroforestry + Bio-slurry + Renewable Energy + Irrigation
• More climate friendly, stable & higher yields
• The project maintains a strong orientation on the differing roles of men and women farmers in farming and in business and also on youth (self) employment.

Job Description
Overview of the Position

• The project team consists of a Project Manager and a Deputy Project Manager based in Lusaka, three Field Coordinators each based in a field office, Climate Smart Agriculture (CSA) and Renewable Energy (RE) officers, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E) officer and a Gender Advisor. The field offices are in Katete (cotton), Choma (dairy), Kabwe (inclusive business in dairy, horticulture and cotton), with some horticultural works extending to Solwezi. The Technical Officer– CSA will be based in Choma and will be responsible for the field implementation of climate smart practices in the project focus areas. In direct coordination with the Project Manager, the incumbent will carry out climate smart interventions and will foster capacity building of stakeholders on climate smart practices along the agricultural value chain. Stakeholders include companies, small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs), cooperatives, government extension officers, agro-dealers, tree nursery farmers, equipment suppliers and farmers.

Key Responsibilities
• Promote and increase stakeholder capacities in climate smart agriculture (CSA) solutions for smallholder farmers.
• Support the switch by companies, SMEs and others to reorient their products and services to cater for a more climate resilient market for the respective agribusinesses/ value chains.
 

• Technical assistance on implementation of CSA practices, often in conjunction with energy colleagues
• Conducting trainings on CSA solutions to a wide range of audiences
• Support Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning activities
• Support in administrative day to day operations of the field office.
• Support the design and implementation of activities in line with the annual project plan.

Qualifications
• Bachelors’ degree in agriculture or other relevant field with a minimum of 3 years working experience OR a School Certificate with a minimum of 5 years working experience,
• Proven track record with over 3 years of experience in climate smart agriculture methods in rural areas; these include agroforestry, conservation farming, integrated water resource management,
 

• Practical experience in one of the following topics: Renewable energy, Youth (self) Employment and Gender,
• Strong communication skills and ability to conduct trainings under extreme conditions
• Private sector experience is an asset,
• ICT / Computer Literacy,
• Fluency in written and oral English, proficiency in multiple local languages is an asset.

Additional information
• This is a full-time National position with the successful candidate being contracted in October 2022 to December 2023. Salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

JOB DETAILS:
This position is for a six months contract in Siavonga
• Our Client is specialised in rehabilitation of Hydraulic Structures and difficult access works underwater upto 200m; rope access; confined area and is currently undertaking a project of rehabilitating the plunge pool of the Kariba dam in Siavonga, Zambia. The Company is now looking for an experienced and qualified individual to be considered for the position of Environmental Health and Safety Officer

Role Summary
• Reporting to the Site Supervisor, the EHS will be responsible for driving and upholding Occupational Health, safety, and Environmental activities and ensure full compliance to the system and supporting site operations to eliminate safety incidents by way of thorough safety investigations inspections and tracking of close out actions.

The EHS Officer’s duties will include but not limited to the following:
Responsibilities
• Ensure that the relevant SHEQ System files and registers are maintained and to evaluate and assess operating / working methods and techniques and make sure they are available for inspection at all times.
• To ensure that all new employees and contractors are inducted prior to them starting work.
 

• To conduct planned inspections of the area of responsibility on a regular basis and to immediately action any deviation found.
• To conduct SHEQ talks and involve all employees and contractors at the start of every shift.
• To conduct monthly SHEQ Meetings.
• To ensure that the information required for the compilation of Accident / Incident report is provided timeously to the SHEQ Manager.
• To comply with and enforce company policies and procedures and company Zambia SHEQ management systems to reduce risks and costs.
• Drive and uphold occupational Health, Safety, and Environmental activities in line with the set HSE and environmental objectives.
 

• Investigate the construction site to ascertain equipment, production, and material processes do not pose a safety or health hazard to employees, work guests, and the general public
• Drive the safety management operating system.
• Ensure all staff onsite wear proper PPE at all times
• Conduct regular safety inspections and audits of the site area including equipment and infrastructures.
• Promote the use of written documentations on JSA, SOPs in all aspect of site operation.
 

• Manage the shift hazard registers as reported by operators and provide timeous feedback to the operators on the status of the close out actions.
• Conduct incident investigations with relevant supervisors and follow ups of the actions.
• Monitor the statutory logbooks and first aid canisters and advise management where necessary.
• Monitor compliance levels of supervisor check list and provide information to management on non-compliances
• Assist in the development and implementation of safety initiatives and policies as directed.
• Maintaining a pro-active approach to all aspects of operational safety and encourage teamwork within the department in line with company values.
• Promoting the use of written documentations on safe work procedures job safety analysis and standard operating procedures.

Experience & Qualifications
• Full Grade 12 Certificate
• Certificate or better in Occupational Health, Safety, and Environment
• Should have a minimum 2 years relevant experience
• Good organisational and record-keeping abilities – the ability to maintain good record of all safety-related activities
• Experience in Safety in Construction will be an added advantage
• Ability to communicate effectively across most levels
• Must be able to confidently deliver presentations to large crews
• Displays initiative and teamwork skills
• Physically fit and able to pass pre-employment medicals
• Able to drive and holds a valid driver’s license
