Org. Setting and Reporting
The UN Development Coordination Office (UN DCO) is the UN Office at the forefront of coordinating a collaborative contribution to the UN development system, towards its achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. The position is located in the United Nations Resident Coordination Office (UN RCO), Information Centre in Lusaka, Zambia.
The UN Resident Coordinator’s Office internship is for 2 to 3 months depending on the needs of the Organization.

In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, applicants may be requested to undertake the internship remotely in view of constraints regarding visa issuance, international travel and access to UN premises. Applicants must be willing and prepared to undertake the internship remotely for a part or the entirety of the internship. The work hours during the internship shall be determined based on individual discussion between the intern and the supervisor(s) taking into consideration the minimum requirements of the Organization and the time difference between the hosting office and the location of the intern

The Internship is UNPAID and full-time.
Interns work five days per week under the supervision of a staff member in the department or office to which they are assigned.

Responsibilities
Daily responsibilities will depend on the individual's background; the intern's assigned office as well as the internship period.
Under the Supervision of direct supervision of the National Information Officer and overall supervision by the Development Coordination Officer, Strategic Planning and RCO Team Leader, the intern will provide support for activities relating to communications, advocacy and media. Duties will include but not be limited to:
• Writing of UN Zambia website stories
• Supporting the layout/design and production of newsletters and brochures
• Supporting the development of communication products such as feature articles
• Compiling content for the Verified Campaign
• Draft compelling Social Media posts around UN Zambia events and UN key messages
• Supporting with a wide range of COVID-19 Risk Communication and Community Engagement (RCCE) tasks including taking notes during meetings
• Assisting with virtual and in person events including launches
• Attending UN Communication Group and Risk Communication Team meetings
• Developing content including images and videos for website and Social Media Platforms
• Supporting with developing and/or updating databases of UN Zambia contacts including government, diplomatic missions, media and NGOs.
• Supporting with research on various subjects both from UN and non-UN online sources
• Providing day-to-day support to office activities both virtually and in person

Education
Applicants must at the time of application meet one of the following requirements:
a. Be enrolled in a graduate school programme (second university degree or equivalent, or higher);
b. Be enrolled in the final academic year of a first university degree program (minimum Bachelor's level or equivalent);
c. Have graduated with Bachelor's degree, Masters, PhD or equivalent
d. Be computer literate in standard software applications.
e. Have demonstrated keen interest in the work of the United Nations and have a personal commitment to the ideals of the Charter;
f. Have a demonstrated ability to successfully interact with individuals of different cultural backgrounds and beliefs, which include willingness to try and understand and be tolerant of differing opinions and views.

Preferred Area of Studies:
Must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree programme of a recognized institution in fields related to journalism, communications, media studies, political and social sciences, economics, international relations, law, marketing, public and business administration, public health or other relevant programmes.

Languages
English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For this internship, fluency in oral and written English is required. Knowledge of another UN Language is desirable.
