The MentalLiberty Foundation
The MentalLiberty Foundation (MLF) is a registered non-profit social enterprise aimed at eradicating mental health care disparities by destigmatizing, de-westernizing, and raising awareness of mental health through culturally-tailored, experience-based interventions.

Brief Overview of What We’re Tackling
Mental disorders tend to strike with a double-edged sword: those affected have to deal with the symptoms and disabilities of their illnesses on one side, and widespread stigma and discrimination on the other. Individual and systematic stigma against people with mental disorders is ubiquitous across Zambia’s mainstream culture, amongst family members, amid general and mental health care providers, and at the level of government where mental-health-centered policies are not formulated and implemented. In Zambia, mental illness and health stigma appears to be propelled by a general misunderstanding of how mental health is influenced by a multitude of factors such as gender, culture, socioeconomic status and other factors that define us as unique individuals.

The lack of the aforementioned is exacerbated by a general “westernization” of mental health whereby individuals believe mental health is “a thing of the western countries,” resulting in higher incidences of mental disorders such as suicide especially among Zambian youths who typically are unwilling to express how they feel mentally and tend to suppress any possible mental illness cues, thereby thwarting effective and accurate diagnosis and treatment of possible mental health disorders. Peer pressure, bullying and mockery, rape culture, gender based violence, domestic violence, toxic masculinity, which are all at record high levels in Zambia, have also being implicated in stimulating the upsurge in mental health disorders. The current mental health care situation in Zambia can’t be overlooked and, therefore, demands immediate rectification– an undertaking that The MentalLiberty Foundation embarked on since its founding in 2020.
