1. Context and Programme Background
1.1 Description of the context
The Joint Country Programmes (JCP) between Norwegian Church Aid (NCA) and Dan Church Aid (DCA) seeks to contribute to “a Zambia where all women, men, girls and boys on equal terms are empowered to enjoy economic, political, social, environmental and democratic rights, so that they are benefitting from a restored sustainable growth of the country”. Under its economic empowerment programme, The Joint Country Programme (JCP) is partnering with Christian Aid to build the capacity of rights holders, to increase sustainable income to meet their basic needs through secured entrepreneurial opportunities and sustainable employment.
1.2 Description of the context of the programme
In 2017, JCP with Christian Aid (CA) as the lead agency, was awarded a grant from the Scottish Government to facilitate economic growth through agriculture and enterprise development. The grant finances a project called Making Agriculture a Business (MAB) for 5 years from 2017 April to 2022 April.
Through harnessing the potential of small-scale farmers/ entrepreneurs as champions of economic development, the project anticipates impact on the livelihoods and resilience of farmers/entrepreneurs especially women, with a focus on including the most marginalised who are young women, and persons with disabilities. These groups range from local community focused groups to business and market trader groups based around neighbouring bulking centres and markets. Links will specifically be made to the John Chinena Market/ Jubilee Women’s Integrated Highway Market’s Programme in Chibombo. The initial target beneficiaries are 4000 farmers and entrepreneurs, the project implementation.
