JOB DETAILS:
Job Purpose
The Foreman – Mechanical will be responsible for supervising and coordinating mechanical maintenance activities at Zambia Gold Company Ltd sites, ensuring the proper functioning of all mechanical equipment and systems in the processing plant, mining machinery, and infrastructure. The role focuses on maximizing equipment reliability, reducing downtime, and ensuring that all work is carried out safely and efficiently.

Key Responsibilities:
Supervision of Mechanical Maintenance:
• Supervise mechanical maintenance crews in the installation, repair, and preventive maintenance of mining and plant machinery such as crushers, conveyors, pumps, and motors.
• Plan and prioritize daily maintenance tasks to minimize downtime and ensure smooth plant operations.
• Monitor equipment performance and ensure that all repairs are completed to a high standard and within required time frames.
• Ensure that all maintenance work complies with health, safety, and environmental standards.
Preventive Maintenance & Repairs:
• Implement and monitor preventive maintenance programs to ensure maximum equipment availability and reliability.
• Identify equipment faults and troubleshoot mechanical issues to minimize disruptions to production.
• Oversee the installation and commissioning of new mechanical equipment and systems.
• Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including repair logs, parts usage, and equipment history.
Team Leadership & Coordination:
• Lead, manage, and train a team of mechanical technicians and fitters, ensuring efficient task allocation and adherence to maintenance schedules.
• Conduct daily toolbox talks and safety meetings with the mechanical maintenance team.
• Ensure team members follow safety protocols and use appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
• Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior staff and assist in their skill development.
Collaboration with Other Departments:
• Work closely with the plant operations team to coordinate maintenance activities without disrupting production.
• Collaborate with the electrical and instrumentation departments to ensure comprehensive maintenance of all systems.
• Report mechanical maintenance progress and challenges to the Maintenance Manager and work with other departments to resolve equipment-related issues.
Spare Parts & Inventory Management:
• Ensure that adequate spare parts and consumables are available for routine maintenance and emergency repairs.
• Work with the procurement department to order parts and materials as needed, ensuring cost-effective sourcing.
• Maintain an organized workshop and parts storage area, ensuring that tools and equipment are properly maintained and stored.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance:
• Ensure all maintenance activities comply with company health, safety, and environmental standards and relevant Zambian regulations.
• Conduct risk assessments and safety inspections of mechanical equipment and systems, ensuring that potential hazards are addressed.
• Promote a safety-first culture within the maintenance team, ensuring that all team members are trained in safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
Reporting & Documentation:
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of all mechanical maintenance activities, equipment performance, and breakdowns.
• Prepare and submit regular reports on equipment condition, maintenance work completed, and any outstanding issues.
• Identify areas for improvement in mechanical maintenance processes and provide recommendations to senior management.

Qualifications and experience
• Grade 12 school certificate
• Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Mechanical Fitting, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical maintenance in a mining or heavy industrial environment, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
• Registered member of the Engineering Institute of Zambia (EIZ) with valid subscription.
• Strong experience working with heavy machinery such as crushers, conveyors, mills, pumps, and hydraulics.
• Knowledge of preventive maintenance strategies, troubleshooting techniques, and repair methods.
• Familiarity with Zambian safety and environmental regulations in the mining industry.

• Strong leadership and team management skills.
• Excellent mechanical troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities.
• Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and mechanical diagrams.
• Strong organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
• Proficient in using maintenance management software and tools.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
