JOB DETAILS:
Landscape Manager Position
WeForest
WeForest is a fast growing international non-profit association with headquarters in Belgium and legal entities in France, USA, Ethiopia and Zambia. Our aim is to demonstrate, through the restoration of entire regions, that well planned tree planting and reforestation can be the solutions to today’s biggest challenge: climate change. The organization is promoting Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) best practices, creating a movement, engaging the greatest brands and their millions of customers to act positively. Our activities are growing and the organization is urgently looking for an experienced profile to further capacitate its Zambian team, and drive the projects there to the highest standards.
Zambia programme
WeForest has been active around agroforestry and sustainable reforestation in Zambia since 2011, starting in Kitwe district, Copperbelt. Currently, four projects are running, two in the Copperbelt and two in Muchinga province, with one additional project which is about to start in Q2, 2021.
The position available would focus on an expansion of the Chintumukulu conservancy:
• The Chintumukulu project, which started in 2020, aims to establish and functionalize a community conservancy of 8,500 ha and support sustainable income sources to run the conservancy in the long-term.
• The forest landscape around Chintumukulu and within the Mutinondo river catchment (Mpumba Chiefdom, Muchinga Province) is an important buffer zone and can become a corridor between two national parks – Lavushi Manda and South Luangwa (approx. 68,000ha). The corridor is a unique location where the Congo and Zambezi river basins meet. The area is at risk from increasing levels of deforestation and encroachment driven by agricultural expansion, charcoal production and land privatization. Around 15% of the whole corridor has already been converted into agricultural land, and this is likely to increase sharply in the coming years. If this buffer zone is not protected there is a significant risk of encroachment and deforestation into the adjacent protected areas (incl. National parks), as well as (genetic) isolation of wildlife. .
Role
The role of the landscape manager would be to:
• Increase collaboration and communication between a varied set of stakeholders incl. NGO’s, local communities and private landowners. This is a prerequisite for creating the corridor.
• Conduct a feasibility study of community conservancies and landscape/forest corridor potential.
• Drive stakeholders closer together by organizing joint meetings and workshops to work out a concept note for the larger corridor.
• Explore land title procedure and track ownership of land in Lusaka with the relevant ministry.
• Assess and, where relevant, support land purchase for community conservancies and entering into long-term agreements with interested large-scale landowners.
• Assessment of the potential, and revitalization of the Mpumba Conservation Trust (MCT), with an assessment of the MCT to become the governing body for a larger corridor.
• Leverage our current relationships, and build bridges to inspire the vision and collaboration that creating the landscape corridor will need. A number of organizations have already expressed their interest and support: Mutinondo Wilderness is immediately adjacent to Chintumukulu conservancy and interested in a long-term partnership to support with training and joint law enforcement exercises. Kasanka Trust is creating a buffer on the southeastern side of Lavushi-Manda National Park where it meets the proposed Mpumba Corridor. African Parks is interested to take over management of Lavushi Manda National Park (by 2021) from the government.
• Conduct or support a feasibility study for a carbon scheme (co-developed with local stakeholders) that can benefit local communities and land owners.
Other tasks:
• Provide marketable communication material on a regular basis about the corridor progress
• Provide direct support to project field teams in terms of capacity building and coaching
• Provide input and actively contribute to fundraising, where relevant to the position
• Promote and cultivate opportunities for tool/resource development, learning and collaboration across projects in Zambia and organisationally.
While the current project is the priority, the landscape manager is also expected to support our expansion, through supporting baselines, evaluation, review and driving other potential FLR projects in the region. The candidate will also be aspected to contribute to internal collaboration and learning within the organization.
