JOB DETAILS:
The Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) has been established by five Southern African countries: Angola, Botswana, Namibia, South Africa and Zambia with financial support from the Federal Republic of Germany. The Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) is SASSCAL's main Donor. The overall objective of SASSCAL is to improve the livelihoods of people and to enhance adaptive land use and sustainable economic development in Southern Africa under global change conditions with particular focus on five thematic areas of Agriculture, Biodiversity, Climate, Forestry and Water. SASSCAL focuses on research, capacity development and the provision of appropriate products and services aimed at mitigating and/or dealing with some of the likely impacts of Climate Change.
The SASSCAL Regional Secretariat, is seeking to recruit a Senior Scientist - (Windhoek, Namibia). Reporting to the Director Science and Technology/Capacity Development, SASSCAL Regional Secretariat. The Senior Scientist will be responsible for the coordination of the SASSCAL's research portfolio. Provide a high-level framework for the guidance of research and innovation investments in climate change and adaptive land management interventions
Duty station: SASSCAL Regional Secretariat, Windhoek, Namibia
Major Responsibilities:
• Coordinate research activities related to the identified and agreed on thematic priority areas of the SASSCAL region.
• Support research projects that address a significant need to collect baseline data, or to understand the drivers of change, or to develop decision support tools or improve people's livelihood
• Coordinate projects that are conducted either on a pilot basis in one country or collectively across more than one country or are of regional importance through its likely impact on the people in the region.
• Support research projects that are geared towards filling current regional gaps in integrated knowledge and linked to an ongoing national or regional or international programme.
• Compile, analyse and disseminate best practices and demonstrate the feasibility of adaptive land management systems.
• Facilitate research through strategic partnerships at national, regional and international levels.
• Align all SASSCAL supported research with the service provision and capacity development agenda of SASSCAL Serve as the chief advisor to the Director, Research & HCD regarding the research programmes and activities of SASSCAL
• Assist the Director, Research and Human Capacity Development (HCD) to develop a research programme in accordance with the Regional and National level priorities set by the participating member states.
Minimum Educational Qualification Requirements:
• A relevant postgraduate qualification PhD in Natural Resources with strong climate change focus.
• Three (3) years
Minimum Experience Requirements:
• Three (3) years progressively post-doctoral research and/or practical research/laboratory work experience
Skills, knowledge and Experienced Required:
• Knowledge and understanding of project/program management and development procedures
• Ability to work effectively under pressure, with diversity and multi-disciplinary teams.
• Excellent time-management and organizational skills.
• Outstanding verbal and written communication skills in English language (Portuguese would be an added advantage
• Proficient in MS office, remote sensing and GIS will serve as an advantage
• Ability to maintain teamwork and harmonious working relationships with individuals of different national and cultural backgrounds.
• Willingness to travel extensively in the region.
Special requirements: Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills in English. Ability to work effectively under pressure. Ability to maintain pleasant working relationships with individuals of different national and cultural backgrounds. Willingness to travel extensively in the region. Experience in similar position with regional or internationals organizations is referred.
LANGUAGES Excellent knowledge of English (both oral and written). Knowledge of other official languages of SADC would be an advantage.
NB: The Executive Director may appoint a candidate at a grade below the advertised grade of the post, with the possibility of promotion to that grade within three years of appointment, subject to satisfactory appraisal of performance.
